Antivirus programs

I have been using Norton for the past 3 years with no problems and now my subscription is coming up for renewal. I know this was discussed before and AVGseems to be a good choice. I was wondering if the free version of AVG is as good as Norton. George

Hi George, here is a post about it if you want to read some opinions: http://www.redlinesonlinemessageboard.yuku.com/topic/15024

I'm using up a McAfee subscription on one of my computers and have AVG on the rest.
No virus gets through here with either program, but free is good.

Some people haven't been able to find the page for AVG Free. They like to hide it, probably because a lot of people just upgrade to the pro version whenthey start seeing notices

Here's where AVG 8 FREE is. They really did a great job on this one. It includesanti-spyware stuff and has a feature for when you use a search engine that shows whether the sites listed are on the "good list" with a green tickmark next to it, a red X for sites you should stay away from unless you know what you're doing, or gray exclamation points if it hasn't been checkedout yet or it's questionable. Unless you absolutely love the Yahoo toolbar, be sure to untick that option when installing AVG 8. I tried it out. Hated it!Took me some doing to get rid of it. You can set the options to not use it, but it's still there unless you know how to hack your registry.

Still, fantastic AV programme and the new built-in spyware engine is pretty cool. Just beware if you have anything like crack files or keygens on your computerthat it will show them as viruses whether they really are or not, so I'm told.

Thanks for the info, I guess I'll save the $40 on Norton and go with AVG. George

I use Spysweeper, it's 30 bucks a year or so, but nothing has gotten through yet.

I've gotten Norton for the past 4 years at around $100.00 a year suscription. Just last week my norton 360 told me I had some type of spy ware virus. Itcouldn't get rid of it so I called tech support in India. One hour later and another $100.00 and I'm virus free again. 360 won't stop the virus butit'll let you know it's there. The tech told me that when youdown load something you give it permission to enter your system. If norton would say this operation is not safe I would of stopped the download.
Tim

Add that one to the list of reasons not to use Norton, Tim. Norton and MacAfee are at the bottom of the list of programmes to use. AVG and Panda are the toptwo. Norton imbeds itself so deeply into your system that removing all traces takes some work. I removed it from a friend's computer and I was amazed atthe number of keys it took up in their registry, along with hidden files all over the place. I've played with viruses that were less intrusive.
