Re: JUST FINISHED MY FIRST PROTOTYPE ADD-ON DRUM
Smokin' design chopper!!!
You will do well with it!
Thanks for the look.
Re: JUST FINISHED MY FIRST PROTOTYPE ADD-ON DRUM
Very inventive and industrious of you and full compliments!
It's been done before...back in the '70s.
The drummer's name eludes me right now, but he had/has a set of at least 8 of them attached to his kit.
The name given them also escapes me right now too! I've been trying to remember for days since your thread appeared, but I just CAN'T remember. But I will, and I will get back here!
I keep thinking Gary McCracken from Max Webster for some obscure reason, but when I looked,...no find a pic. There is a pic in some album cover that I JUST can't think of either.
I'm also thinking the Toronto prog rock band FM w/Nash The Slash from the '70s ...
Just can't remember...
The 8 were all the same diameter as yours, and as yours...various lenghts.
Personally,...I would put a set of clear Ludwig SilverDot skins on those. I have them on my 6" & 8" Bongo Toms. Gives a nice 'CRACK' sound when played, but that depends on the type of sound yer lookin' for.
I have blue Evans Hydraulics on the 12", 13", 14", 15", and 16" Floor Toms, all open ended, and the 22" kick too, bit IT has a Ludwig Heavy Clear in front with an 8" hole I cut out very carefully. All give a real nice rich natural woody sound with a wee bit of WOW to them that carries on after a whackin'! NO TAPE on ANY drums. I just DON'T like that which MOST other drummers do.
My kit is a kit I bought at Waterloo Music in Ontario here in 1978.
All are Ludwig 6 ply maple shells w/glossy black cortex.
6", 8", 12", 13", 14" 15", 16" & 22"
Acrolyte Snare (metal, like a magnesium colour)
Cymbals:
Sabian 6" Splash
Sabian 22" Heavy Ping Ride (polished)
Zildjian 12" Hi Hats
Zildjian 12" China Type
Zildjian 16" Splash
Zildjian 18" Crash
Zildjian 22" Medium Ride
Miscellaneous other Whackety Whacks:
6" Triangle (I painted it spectraflame aqua lol...)
Cow Bell
Attachable Tambourine (on Hi Hat). Not mounted,...never have.
Leedy & Ludwig Wood Block (from the '30s,......collector's item).
and....THE BEST pedal EVER invented.....Ludwig Speed King, which I modified to my liking. Feels like it's NOT EVEN there. Totally EFFORTLESS to use and a very simple design,...unlike ALL the OTHER JUNK anyone has EVER come up with! All those kicks with the springs, and the gears, and the levers, and all the WHACKY ideas guys have come up with over the years. Even the Ludwig Ghost Pedal sucks compared to the SK, which I had one of. VERY expensive JUNK that pedal was! lol...They're ALL junk compared the the Speed King. Try one out,...you'll NEVER go back to anything else. So effective and easy,...I can do lightning fast 'TRIPLETS' on it.
My kit is almost 35 yrs old and is still in virtually MINT condition. Even after all that draggin' them back and forth from one end of the country to the other, and from house to house to house over the years, various bars, etc.... I went to GREAT lenghts to keep them that way.
***Intersting note about Sabian Cymbals:
After the family feud between Armand and Robert Zildjian, Robert left and formed his own company here in Canada in New Brunswick. He was trying to come up with a name. Eventually he arrived at Sabian, created by taking the 1st 2 letters from his childrens' names. Those being Sally, Billy, and Andy.
I always just assumed that was some sort of Arabic word for something,...but NOT. INGENIOUS name I figure!
There's a show I saw on TV a while back about Sabian. I'll try to find the name for you. VERY interesting show!
Now, back to you,...It would be interesting to experiment with various skins, particularly the blue Evans on those you build.
VERY cool stuff ya have there indeed... Kudos Dudo!
Re: JUST FINISHED MY FIRST PROTOTYPE ADD-ON DRUM
I still can't remember the name of the drummer who I first seen use these,...but I went to sleep last night with it in mind...
At about 4:00am I suddenly woke up, to have a whiz,....and the first thing that popped into my mind was...
OCTOBANS..........BAM!!!
Just what I was trying to remember!!!
8 different length cylinders, each representing a precise note in an Octave....in any given key!!!
Note the word 'precise'..... and Not ANY random length or diameter as you have to capture a certain frequency depending in which key you are representing....Make sense to you?...Do you consider this when constructing your drums...?
An electronic tuner used for tuning guitars might help accomplish this...
After googling the word Octoban,...I still didn't come up with the drummer I was trying to remember,...but I DID come up with THIS guy trapped within THIS (2nd pic) Lunatic Asylum of a drum kit! It's like a cage for a Wild Animal... lol...
***Daniel Löble, drummer of Helloween
Ever hear of that band...?
Probably lookin' at,...at LEAST $30,000 - $40,000 if not more for THAT beast of a setup...:D
I say 'trapped' because as you may know,....drumming, or any OTHER discipline within music IS an absolute 'obssession'...
Never heard of the guy, or the band,...but the drum kit SURE is impressive...
He'd have to be what I call a 'Busy' drummer.... I'd like to hear what he can do on it...'In it'... Whatever...
Note the smaller pic with the black Octos...... Being only 4...maybe Quatros would be more appropriate...
ALSO,...I tried to get into the 'Crush Drums' website but was having trouble getting it to fully load.. Try again later...
I've never heard of that drum company before... but I'll check it out...

Are you in a band or are jammin' with folks right now Joe...?
I'm not currently doin' ANYTHING.
I hope to get jammin with buddy a couple of doors over,...who is the original guitarist for,...hold on to your head and DON'T scream like a little girl,....
Teenage Head.....ahahahahahahahahHAHAHAHAHAHAHaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa........
He got kicked out way back then when he kicked the crap outta the singer RIGHT on the stage....lol...
They were responsible (not really) for a few riots that broke out here and there at several venues...
He don't play that rockabilly crap no more, but now plays wicked blues...
Also....Check this band out...
That's my brother blowin' on that Tenor Sax....he's the stupid lookin' %$&^$er with puffed up cheeks and a near bald head...
lol...
Dan the drummer boy is REALLY good...
They get LOT's of killer gigs.... Like the Beaches Jazz Fest in Toronto every July....
