Help me make a decision on a 1:1 ** DECISION MADE** PICS
Hello fellas,
I've been pondering buying a 1:1. My brother had a 73 charger and a 74' challenger back in the 80s that I drove a lot, and really liked them. He got the challenger for his high school graduation drove it for about 4 years... He let me drive it a lot, but he bought a 73' charger right before my graduation. Both were the matalic green colors. Both had 318s in them I believe. Both were in awesome shape when we left them to my dad in the mid 90's There they sat for about 5 years...then there was a lurker that would come every year for about 8 years he came and asked if he would sell. Then finally about 5 years ago he sold them... CHEAP. My brother told Dad not to sell them, but he did anyway...must have been the altzhiemers kicking in. They were officially his, because my brother gave them to him to pay debt he had to my Dad Anyway, can't get them back now, so I'm in the market for a challenger. I was debating a Mustang as well. A buddy of mine has a El'Grande in great original shape...I think its a 73 or 74. He got it about 12 years ago...it was sitting out in a vacant lot. No for sale sign on it, but we stopped and asked and they said yep, for sale. I think he paid 3K for it. Did some work...probably 1 to 2 K into it. replacing gas tank and fuel lines. He doesn't ever drive it today, so I'm thinking he would take about 6K for it. Its got a 302 and is a brown color. Really a pretty nice car. I don't know where these book at , but as far as being in original condition, I'd say its a 8.5 out of 10.
On another note, I've been debating on a new challenger, where my roots are. I'd do a charger, but challengers just appeal to me more. If I do it, I'm going to shoot for a new SRT. I know these won't ever be as collectable as vintage, but I want something I can run and not worry about anything breaking down. I'd also like to go to car shows. Would car shows let me show a newer ride? I'd just like to do some things with my wife...and hang out with a community of collectors/lovers of cars. I'd like to do things like bennifit type things... makes a person feel good doing it, and its fun to hang out and listen to stories.
So to you my fellows, what to do? Should I offer my buddy a decent amount for his nice vintage Elgrande? Find a nice vintage Challenger, Find a nice vintage fastback mustang? Buy a new Challenger? I'll need some sort of finance for the higher dollar cars. Can spend around 50K max. I can trade in my truck new and get around 26,000K trade in, which is pure $, as I don't owe anything on it. Its my business truck, so I'd need to find a cheap replacement. Something around 3K would do the trick. besides I don't have any room in the garage because the new ride will be in there. So, the truck will sit in the elements...just used to haul materials every now and again (3 or 4 times a year). I've debated selling most of my hotwheels collection as well. Don't know if I want to do that though. I'll always keep a select few. Market is down a lot, and don't want to take a huge hit, but with them, it was never about the money anyway.
Just seen a pearl blue SRT.....thats the color I need... LOL Would like a convertable...but don't know if they make them in a convertable.
Thanks for any insite!
Jimmy

Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
Thats cool! Did that come with the cold air intake like that or is that a mod? nice car, and I bet its a beast on the road! I can't get over how clean that egine compartment is.. WOW
-
Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
The engine compartment is modded out including the Cold Air Intake, Custom sheet metal, oil catch can, billet caps, braided hoses, predator tuning device. I also have a magnatech exhaust. I would say it pushes 460-475 hp at the crank.
check out this board when you get a chance. i just got back from the national which is all challenger, magnums, chargers & 300's . These guys have 2010 challengers running high 9's

Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
Do you buy new Hot Wheels or vintage redlines?
Why?
1. Maybe cause there are millions of the new ones and they can be found anywhere?
2. Maybe cause there is no 'investment' value to the new ones like the old ones?
3. Maybe cause the new ones have no style/class/collectability like the old redlines?
4. Maybe cause anyone with the money can buy new Hot Wheels where to find a killer clean original redline takes some work and some hunting skills?
5. Maybe cause you love showing off your very hard to find vintage redlines and how many times have you thought about showing off a new Hot Wheels?
Just a little food for the mind.
Whatever decision you make will be the right one for you.
Can't wait to see your new addition!

Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
Go with what you know. If you have a background in Dodge cars, go with one of those. That way, you won't experience anything you haven't before and will be able to work on it without having to learn anything new. Look around your town and the internet. You'd be surprised what you can find on craigslist or just on a drive around town.
If you can't find anything old that you like go with a new Challenger. That way, you'll still be happy with yourself knowing you got a Dodge. I am fairly sure that most car shows and drive ins allow old models to participate as well as new (or at least that's the way I've experienced it).
Above all get what you want and know you'll be happy with regardless of what is said by me or anyone else.
Just my two Lincoln heads.

Wait till the 12s come out, mo power

Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
The new ones are very nice, but there's nothing like a mint vintage. If I were you (and almost wish I was with your money), I would buy an old minty Challenger. Just like redlines, it will always hold its value if kept in mint condition. Where as something new will always depreciate for a while. You wouldn't regret it.

Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
Jimmy, Check out " Drop top customs" in High Springs ,Fl. They do custom challanger convertibles. If you want reliability you should go with the new. Chrysler is also building an srt8 300 next year. If you have the dough for a classic and a friend thats a mechanic , dont want to drive to far go with the old.
-
Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
Also check out HPP- Heide performance products. They are making a superbird out of the new challangers.

Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
I'd go with vintage original. Of course the news one's with modern technology would be great, but there's just something about the original version!!
I lust for these two cars in that plum crazy color!

Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
There's another customizing company out there that works upgrading modifications, and body/paint on vintage or new Mopar, and even convertible conversions...but I'll be darned if I can remember the name now..dang. Their vintage work is incredible. I recall seeing red and black 68(?) Chargers..Wow..were they nice. Someone help me out here..lol.
Either way, good luck with your project.

Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
That Magnum is a Awesome Mikebng. My boss drives one and it hauls a$$ in total comfort. I would always go with a classic though. Even though the "E" bodies are getting more expensive by the day there are still some great deals out there on the 72 through 74s. They are definitely going to go up in value as the 70 and 71s are getting very hard to find. Here is a couple pics of cars we built at work. Enjoy

Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
WOW, thanks for the ideas. Lots of good stuff to look up and go on. Those two mopars are off the charts Scott....unbelieveable. Jeff, your work? Thats what you do for a living?
Jeff (toysalot), you have some good points....I wish it was that simple though LOL
The problem with buying vintage is I'd have to go with original...totally... maybe new paint. I collect old bikes as well, and there is nothing like old paint on the bike. Problem with most cars is that there is so much that could be changed out. I'm not that versed in vintage cars...but bikes I know inside out. I can tell when something is new and not NOS. From what I've found about vintage cars is that most of the time the cars are hacked up, rusted out and panels replaced...motors replaced...or upgraded...or bored out larger. New insides tore out and replaced with new. So really to find an original challenger is going to be very pricey and tough to spot. Usually the sellers are not very honest, but thats when a friend that knows cars inside out would come in handy. I know how to check numbers on the body and engine. But thats probably about it. I'm considering new because I can order everything I want and get it straight from the factory. And with the way these things run, I wouldn't expect the value to come down to much...and honestly...in the future about 20 years down the road....they may actually be worth more that paid...as long as there is low mileage... I don't know though.... eventually when we're crusty old, the vintage of today may be just as collectable as the new today. One never knows for sure. If we look at the 50s models today, has the price for those models came down in the 80s and 90s? I would think they are not as collectable today because the generation is leaving us...but I could be wrong.
No matter how it is said, I'd much rather have a vintage ride...no doubt about it....but I'd like to have a vintage ride that is reliable, original...and within my price range (which will be hard to find). If I cannot find that I'll probably go with a 2012 SRT...which really is sounding just as sweet just about now.
Here in Iowa, its tough to find clean rust free cars....really tough... However in Cali...there probably on every street corner... LOL The Iowa winters would destroy a car in 1 year. Big decisions...but either way, I would love both...just gotta have some patience and do some research.... its just such a tough search...for a nice vintage. Everything I've heard about the newer challengers have been great...people really love them.
Say, Jeff, your pictures aren't coming thru, can you try to repost?
Thanks

Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
My two cents only because you asked. I never cared for the 73-74 Mustangs, especially the El Grande. They rank right up there with leasure suits.
There are positives to a new car if you want. I'll let you in on a secret though. You can take them to car shows but everyone there with an old car is going to make fun of you behind your back.
Take your time. Look and look until you find what you really want. If that is a Charger or Challenger, you'll find something. If it's in another part of the country, get a buddy and go get it. I went on a 13 hour round trip to get my Honda Dream because I just couldn't find what I wanted any closer. I decided I wanted a CB750 recently. I watched eBay constantly. I wanted as early of one as I could get and still afford. I also wanted as original as possible.
After looking for months I finally found a 71 (production date 9/70) 2 hours from home. I looked at new bikes but I knew I just wouldn't be satisfied with one. I have a blast riding the 750. Part of the deal in buying an old car is listening to every strange sound it makes as you drive along. If that's not something you would like, buy the new car.

Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
Jimbo,
I would go with a vintage musclecar ... Hands down.
I like the Challenger or Charger idea. New cars are nice and they have the Technology however you can liken a new car to a 2011 first edition vs a classic musclecar to a redline .
If you decide to go with a vintage Mustang I would pass on the Grande and get a Mach 1 or fastback.
Grandes are nice but kind of subtle looking IMO
Good luck with your search!

Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
Vintage Challenger!!! The new ones just aren't the same. there is nothing like and old Mopar. Anyone can buy a new car and keep it nice. Find a 318 Challenger(or any Mopar for that matter), my Satellite(my signature) has a 318, and it runs really good. I've had no issues for the 20+ years I've owned it. She is getting a 440 with a stick(aftermarket 5 speed) eventually.
I personally would skip the Fords, but they have the advantage of reproducing just about every part(especially for 'Stangs), just like GM. So a restoration can be done with all new parts.

Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
Hey guys! Thanks again for the ideas. Helps a lot. 1Perry, I agree, but I don't really care if anyone laughs at me...it would probably beat 85% of them on the road LOL.... No really, its still a tough decision. A part of my decision is that I can easily get a loan for it thru their credit...buying a vintage car, most likely will be buying from a individual, in which I'll need to arrange some sort of financing. I can also trade in my truck thru the dealer also...which would help....I wouldn't need to sell outright. I'm gonna do some searching for vintage...and see what I can come up with. We have a few vintage restorers here in Iowa...some good ones...so I think I'll be able to see more clearer here when I get a chance to visit. I'm probably going to sell my collection of reds, save a few, Bought for 70K and will part for around 44... Will probably hit the LA show and sell...we'll see what my buddy (ssizzler) wants to do.
Thanks agian guys.

Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
We'll that's great to hear that you'll be at the LA convention!
Knowing you ...there will be some good dealing out of your room LOL!

Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
Not alot of cars then or now that would be as b*tchen to drive as that 'cuda in Scott's pictures. 500KR's, Z-28's. Hemi Chargers. If you know what it takes to care for a vintage, and you're willing to never let it out of your sight, and you possess the self-control to withhold any violence should anybody ding it, well, maybe vintage would be cool. New car bennies: It's new. Cheaper insurance. Better gas mi. You could leave it in the parking lot with a nice alarm. You MIGHT let someone else go around the block with it. So go buy a new Challenger, make the dealer squeal like a pig, paint it vintage plum -crazy or whatever you dig, and "personalize" it as only you could.
-
Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
That there would be Johnny! Hope I can make it though... We'll see. Called the vintage restorers yesterday (brick Street Muscle) and they gave me the jist of it. Seems like insurance is cheaper than a new car...from what he told me. Getting a loan is fairly easy as well. They have a nice Chevelle in there with rally stripes. Wanting around 60K for it though LOL I put a spreadsheet together yesterday...and it came out to around 75K reds and blackwalls that I'll part with. Gonna try and sell as a collection first... LOL and then go from there. The convention would help take care of many of them, but if its slow, then it will be tough still.
Thanks Bass, you know I'd be pissed if someone dung either or LOL. I'm still leaning with vintage...just not much out there. If someone gets any leads on anything, swing it my way. Thanks fellas
Jimbo

There's more...man, I can spend hours dream shopping at Hemmings!!!
-
Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
Just my two cents. I would never go through a professional restorer. You most likely could buy a Chevelle that was at least 97% of what they are offering for half the money. (or less if you are willing to do the work to find one).
-
Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
Point well taken Perry...I know what you mean. I'm going to start doing some research... I'll find one...and I'll be patient doing it. If I sell my toys that would help, but I can dig up some cash regardless... If something shows up now, I'll bite, but otherwise, sometime next year is good too..
Thanks again Scott, those are sweet... 30K out of my price range, but I could dig it up somehow... I probably have that in some motorcycles I don't need LOL

this is my 08' SRT and sorry to say i won't buy another vintage car after owning this. sure old cars hold their value, but these are much more comfortable and fast. you can run low 13's with the a/c on and it doesn't over heat while idling. plenty of mods and upgrades out there to choose from.there's just something about sticking to a vinyl seat in the summer that doesn't appeal to me anymore lol

Sweet cars everyone.... You guys aren't making it easy... LOL For what I want in a vintage car I'm probably gonna pay around 70 to 90K for. Still debating a 2012 Challenger SRT... Damn...this is tough!

What in the world are you wanting?
-
Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
Hell, I don't know... LOL... Maybe some 5 hour energy or something that will make me think clearer....Ginseng maybe :) Still wanting a Challenger new or Vintage...those Cudas Scotts been putting up have been looking real good. Still, I need to do my homework if I go the vintage route.

There are tons and tons of very nice Cuda's you can get for less than 70K.

Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
I hate to be the one to say it, but the mantra for collectible cars holds true in every scale be it 1:87, 1:64, 1:18, or 1:1. Buy what you like and like what you buy. If you're after a Mopar, I would have to say go with your heart.
I walked away from a 1967 Oldsmobile 442 this past year (was getting it for $500, with a 350 rocket in it, not running) after finding out a) no one was there the day I was, even though I gave them 3 weeks notice and drove 5 hours and b) the brother posted it for sale and stated it was a CLONE (he helped put the badges on) online not long after that and I was rearranging another 5 hour trip to go get it.
I did get a '71 Monte Carlo project for my brother for $100.00 after finding it on a recon trip to the same place. I'm still looking for my car.
-
Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
Thanks for the write up Lobo. Perry, lots of what I'm seeing on Hemmings, that I like, is in that range...or over of course.. LOL There are a couple on there that may be a little less, but not much. I like numbers matching everything, original excellent interior, low rust cars. Seems like they are all up there. I'm a picky bastard, just like with my little 1/64th cars :)

Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
67's are my favorite Olds. We had a 67 Cutlass Turnpike Cruiser. 400, dual exhaust, but a 2 bbl carb and highway gears in the ass end(something like a 2.42 gear ratio). You don't hear a lot about that model, but my dad has a road & track with a write up about the package. The car was fast, but did good mileage-wise too. I remember having starter issues whan the car was hot. It was to be saved for my first car but my mom left an open bag of rock salt in the trunk. So I go the Mopar and am happier for it.
-
Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
There's a lot of things previous owners can change by the time a car gets to you. It's inevitable. The guy had had the '67 Olds for over 10 years, and had killed a 455 he had put in it and had replaced that with the 350 rocket. The car needed a good going over before it would have started up. Regardless, it was a pretty decent restoration candidate. But anywho...thanks for the comments.

Re: Help me make a decision on a 1:1
Luckily I bought my Mopar from the original owner and she was almost 80 when I bought it. It was bone stock and original.
