I installed the front and rear lid body seals, installed the wire harness ( it runs from the frontcompartment up the windshield pillar along the roof and out the engine compartment.) Latest pics from the weekend and today. I installed the outside door handles and the door latches. Some close ups on the hood and trunk lid seals. Today Ipainted the glove box door, dash grilles, radio delete plate, seat springs, ash tray face plate and paasenger door arm rest. Here are some of the parts that need to get re-done. The steering column, bracket, shaft clamp, steering shaft, rear seat brace, vin plate, dash grilles. Ifabricated some dash grille block off plates since I won't be installing the factory speaker and optional gas gauge. I also installed the access coversunder the front hood and the speedometer cable tube. It was rebuilt some time ago. No one was sure when, but it was rebuilt by a VW master tech. He has since passed away. I took the spark plugs out today. They looked good, not too dirty. The mechanic at the shop said they looked newish. We looked inside the cylinders and handcranked the enging and everything looks good. We will do a compression check too. I will be replacing the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap. rotor, points, condenser, oil, oil filter, valve cover gaskets, exhaust gaskets, intake gaskets,re-build carberator, convert to 12 volt (which means a fairly expensive alternator), I want to run a nice stereo system in it, plus have bright headlights andtailights. Today I rebuilt the lower engine tins. I won't be running heat, but I have to install the tins for cooling purposes. I will modify them so theywork like air scoops to help cool the engine. I do have original paperwork for this car too. I have the original service booklet, owners instruction manual, window sticker (what's left of it). It wasdelivered to a VW dealership in Flint Michigan. Sticker price is $ 1653.87. Thanks again everyone for the positive responses !!! Steve

I have been busy with the engine. Cleaning, de-greasing, beadblasting, repairing the clogged intake I bought last year, waiting on parts (it'sChristmas you know). I also bought a steering wheel of the Samba that was re-done a few years ago, I need to freshen it up. It is in much better shape then theoriginal. I've also been busy with other work related projects. The Mustang is done, and we are tearing into the '51 Jeepster and the '60 Corvetteprojects now. I will post some pics when I get them uploaded. Bob,, Thank you for not letting anyone forget about this thread. I am currently waiting for all my Christmas $$ to come in so I can place another 1000.00 order withthe VW parts places. If anyone ever tells you restoring cars is cheap.... tell the to STHU !!!! I am also doing research in order to restore the engine andrelated parts to be the most efficient. I am in email coorespondence with qualified techs in order to acheive this. The process is slow, but I don't wantto have to pull the motor out after I lower the body to the chassis. I want to make sure it is done right the first time. I have also discovered cracks in theclutch surface and that's not good. I know this is the boring part of the resto, but it is as important as all the prep work that goes into the paint job.Here are a couple pics of the intake after I unclogged the heat riser tube. I also re-welded the 2 tubes where they were welded from the factory. I ended upcutting a 1" x 3 1/2" section out of both sides in order to sandblast out the rust clogging the tube. This is the old intake. I was a little busy the last couple days, but I did get the muffler blasted, sadned and painted black. Today I repaired and modified the lower cooling tins. Iam going to use them as air scoops to allow more air to travel across the motor while I am driving. Then the got shot with por-15 gloss black. This is what the muffler looked like when I got it. The paint was really crappy and chipped off way too easy. Here's the engine almost completed: <img height="768" src="http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee267/MI65IMPALA/59%20Beetle%20pics/DSC03483.jpg" width="1024" alt="image"> It won't be long now. I drained the oil and then laid the engine on it's flywheel and wire wheeled the bottom and cleaned and degreased it. Then Ipainted the oil cover and drain plug. <img src="http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee267/MI65IMPALA/59%20Beetle%20pics/DSC03484.jpg" alt="image"> <img src="http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee267/MI65IMPALA/59%20Beetle%20pics/DSC03485.jpg" alt="image">Monday I will install the filter screen, cover, drain plug and hopefully I will have time to install the engine on the chassis this week. I tried to get thespecial license plate registered saturday, but I need to get the car inspected by the state Police before I can do that. Indiana passed a new law that allowsyou to put a year specific plate on your antique auto. I have an old 1959 plate that belonged to my brother-in-laws grandfather. It is in near mint condition.It is also from the county I live in. Very cool to know the history of the plate and have it stay in the extended family. I started this build as a dedicationto my maternal grandfather and it will have plates from another grandfather from a family member. He was a car nut too and he was very into old Indianmotorcycles. The last few weeks have been very trying for me as I really don't have much knowledge of the mechanical side of cars. But I have been verywell coached by our hotrod shop mechanic. It aslo helps to have a repair manual handy. I have faith in my abilities though, I totally restored a 1963 PontiacLemans convertable 18 yrs ago and did everything on that car too. Never had a single problem. Oh well, in a few days my photobucket pics will be back, for nowI will be using my sons account. Enjoy, Steve

Sorry guys and girls.... My job as an autobody repairman sometimes gets in the way of my side projects. Also my job as a father takes precedence over my hobby.I got the egine almost ready to go back together with the trans. I just need some motivation to get back on track. It's hard to find time when I am workingon my own daily driver too. Updates are coming soon. Steve
