Bear this in mind, I don't know, but what %age of prisons in the US are or have been privatized. I always had the impression that in the US that maybeincarcerating people is more of an industry than anything. Industries are dependant on growth, and it's definately a growth industry. Small and medium drugoffences and property crimes can be far more effectively dealt with in other ways, starting up front, and not after the damage is done. Think of this, ironically enough, Rob's job is dependant on crime! Take away the crime, and you take away employment, and legal costs, and insurance payouts, etc... andput a dent in the Gross National Product. One reason I think that the RCMP and other agencies want to keep marijuana and other drugs illegal is to keep ahealthy level of crime up so they can cry wolf and demand more and more money for all those exciting expensive crime fighting toys such as helicopters, DodgeStealth Interceptors with Hemis in them, (I was crackin' a joke to a local cop the other day who was driving an all white Hemi Dodge of some sort, and Ilaughed and said, "Just who in the heck are you gonna need that for to chase around here? LOLOL!!! No offence Rob! I know you're fightin' the GoodFight dude! Power to you, keep it up!!!! And just why is marijuana so expensive. You can grow a whole dump truck full for $50.00 tops! In the space of say 3ftby 3ft you can grow a few small baskets of Tomatos. How much are they, a few $$$ each? In the same amount of space in the same amount of time, you can growroughly the same amount of pot. The tomatos sell for $10 to $20, the pot $4000.00. There is something drastically wrong here!!! The Tomatos are drasticallyundervalued. One Tomato should cost roughly $200.00, or maybe it's because a mere herb is astronomically overvalued. Yes, the pot is in reality only worth$10 or $20. Yes! See where the ridiculous war on drugs and particularly, on marijuana has gotten us? The ridiculous amounts of money spent both fighting it,and by purchasers, is what drives crime from both ends. See what the amounts of money involved drives! Now, I do realize that a lotta drugs, along withalcohol, and other things, isn't good for a healthy society. Seriously, how does a rationally sane person condone the use particularly of substances suchas this crystal meth, or heroine , or cocaine. In this world today, you cannot have a nation wired on stuff like meth and crack and heroine. It will rotsociety from the inside out and outside in. In today's world you gotta have a clear head and be ready. It's a quagmire! ........Waitin' on Raedhere! Take the money outta the drugs for one, and you'll put a major dent in crime. I also wanted to add that I will insult the President of the so called GREATEST nation on Earth. I have NO respect whatsoever for an a$$ like thatBush. He insulted me first when he looked into the camera lens talking to Canadians after we refused to send troops to Iraq and gave us theultimatum......"You're either with us, or you're with the terrorists". When you guys got nailed on 9/11, our country was shocked, and at therequest of the US government, we so happily and gladly opened our airspace and airports to dozens or 100s of unscheduled aircraft from your country and othersfor a safe place to land. Any of those planes could have hit us too! Like I said before about Bush's amibiguous threats, my first reaction was to utter thewords "Go F$%K yourself meatball!" How dare that guy say that to us, how dare he. POS! Andy

Lemme get this straight...it' Bush that is killing innocent Iraqis and young soldiers? Last time I checked it was a bunch of brainwashed nutballs thatliked blowing themselves up in the name of "peace" doing that.

Let me 'splain somethin' to you, Lucy... Let's pretend my house is a country and the local police are the American armed forces. If I don'twant the police coming in my house and hunting me and my family down room to room, I don't go into neighbors' houses and attack them and I don'tblow up the family dog in my yard to "make a point about peace." And if I did, then I certainly wouldn't expect anyone else in town to blame thepolice for invading my house.

But on the world level, that's what the US is up against. Nutball terrorists on the one hand and mamsy-pamsy "don't hurt anyone" pacifists onthe other.

Stop me if you've heard this joke: I don't care if the meek inherit the earth. What are they going to do to stop me from taking it from them? They're a bunch of meeks.

You know why pacifists don't rule the world? Because they don't do crap when other people threaten them. They roll over and expose their softunderbellies. Look at France. France used to be a dominant world power. Back in the day, they started to help the fledgling colonies and England decided itwasn't worth it. Then France went soft. Rolled over for Germany not once...TWICE. Roll over in the UN every day. And who is it that bails their butts outtime and again? The US.

If the Iraqi terrorists really wanted to get the US out of the middle east, you know what they'd do?

Nothing.

They'd stop blowing everything up and beheading people. They'd go to work. They'd play soccer (yeah, that's right. SOCCER) to pass the time.

But no. They go make dicks of themselves to keep the US military presence there.

Why?

Because it helps them recruit new nutball members to their "cause." It's a never-ending war and they are doing everything to perpetuate it.

Clinton played soft and they kept bombing and bombing and bombing all around the world.

Bush stepped up to the plate and they're hiding in caves and putting IEDs in the ditches.

Yeah, people die because of it. But if we weren't there to contain their BS, they'd be flying around the world blowing things up willie-nillie.

Don't try to foist this off on "warmongers" Bush and Cheney or the USA. Maybe "we" shouldn't be there, but I don't see anyoneelse stepping up and saying "somebody has to stop this 7th Century crap."

If anyone seriously wants the US to get out of Iraq, they should go talk to the terrorists and tell them to behave.

I'm sure they'll be more than happy to broadcast *that* execution on Al Jihad-vision.

Joel.

Dave! Really, I'm not trying to be nasty. Really. It's more the cynical voice of dis-enchantment with the path the US has gone, and not just as ofrecent years. I know there's a lot of good the US does and has done in the world, and is full of good people. Maybe my ideals are that of the later'60s or '70s or previous. Let me put it this way without sounding foolish. I used to see you guys as being a lot like the Federation in the originalStar Trek series (Gene Roddenberry was a Navy Guy), but instead of a space ship far out in space, the US was the space ship, and the Earth was space. Try toget everyone into one big federation so we can trade in goods and culture, and get along, and not interfere in each others affairs with the exception of comingto the rescue in the face of overwhelming danger, and to have sufficient might to defend the ideal. It's not unlike Star Wars, or, The Bible oddly enough, the Judeo-Christian way of doing things, whether you're a believer or not. Anyway, I don't know lot's about American history, maybe more than most, but slavery aside and a few other issues, The American ideal is not unlike that of Star Trek, and your very Constitution ranks with some of the greatestcharters, if not the greatest, since The Magna Carta. I always had an admiration of the US. I have friends there who I see occassionally. The terrain is nice.Something though has gone seriously wrong, bad, and fast, and it's outta hand, and outta line. I'm like Gramps. A lotta people get bent outta shapewith him, but I like him, only expect, and want to see better from my own. I don't know what Gramps' take on the DP is. And when I say my own, thatincludes the US. There really is no border culturally, trust me on that from the perspective of being on this side, we're just not as intense. But the wayyou've gone in recent years under Bush is just attrocious. Isn't the US supposed to be just like in all them '50s and '60s war movies, or JohnWayne movies? I will maintain that the US is being poisoned with all the violence and filth on TV and in the movies, and culture in general, is goin' downthe toilet. One more thing pertinent to Rob's original question before I shut up, in Star Trek, the Federation never executed criminals, and sought tochange such behaviour in societies they encountered. They were humane. They were evolved! OK, I shut up now! Andy
