UPDATE..IE users BEWARE....Anybody Else Got Worms?

So if you clicked on someones profile, that may be how you got a worm from an ad.<br>I paid the $6-$7 or whatever it was for a year to keep the ads off anything I view on Yuku so I don't ever see them.<br><br><br>

One popped up on mine about aweek ago and I just X'd it out. Soon as you click on to 'update' yer computer, in goes a virus or something and hijacks your computer and youcan't get it out. They said Microsoft will likely prepare an 'Emergency' fix patch which can be downloaded to your computer.<br><br>Andy<img height="15" src="http://redlinesonlinemessageboard.yuku.com/domain/bypass/images/pacman.gif" width="15" alt="image"><br>

I heard this today on the radio, and they strongly urged people to NOT use Internet Explorer.<br>I'm using Mozilla, so I think I'm safe. Another good browser is: www.google.com/chrome<br>

It's not just MSIE. Firefox can be affected if you have the latest updates for Windows and Java. Microsoft's latest screw-up to patch previous holescreated an even larger one.<br><br>If you haven't updated Windows lately, I wouldn't for a few more days. If you have automatic updates, I pity you hehehe<br><br>The worm isn't a real worm, at least not at first. It's an ad popup that is made to look like a notice from Windows Firewall. That was a big sign forme, as I don't use Windows Firewall. They do it via javascript, which exploits a hole in Windows security. IF you see a pop-up window that looks like thepicture below, click on the X in the upper-right corner. It's your only option, other than to visit the fake web site. If you leave it for more than ~15seconds, it will automatically forward you to their web site anyway.<br><br><img src="http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a22/kat-illac/fake_security_alert.jpg" alt="image"><br><br>The web site looks like a legit software site, but it's not. They use a hacked copy of the original software they are touting, but if you look at the URL,you'll notice it's not the right place. If you do install anything from their site, it will install a trojan that turns your computer into a zombieattacker when you're online. What that means is, while you are online, you won't notice unless you note that your bandwidth use is extreme. In thebackground, it uses the power of multiple computers to "call in" and receive further commands for DDoS attacks.<br><br>If the people behind this are in the US, I am sure that the FBI will be giving them a visit shortly.<br><br>IF you ever do get the pop-up, there will be rogue spyware files placed on your computer automatically via javascript. That's where Microsoft totallyscrewed the pooch in their coding. So, if anyone does see that, and no one has put out an all-in-one fix for it yet (I haven't checked today), you can getinstructions for how to manually remove in <a href="http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/778781-think-i-have-virus-help-2.html" target="_blank">thisthread</a> (opens in a new window, away from RLOL/Yuku).<br><br>That's the big threat right now, but there is another rogue advertiser about that uses javascript (again, thanks, Microsquat!) when you are browsing a website that has advertisements, will auto-forward you to another web site. You can click the down arrow next to your browser's "back" button to goback two or three pages to get where you were and there's no real harm, other than the temporary files and cookies you get from inadvertently visiting theother web site. I'm a big proponent of clearing browser cache and temporary files after every session, so I usually don't run into other problems.<br><br>Hope that helps if anyone gets smacked by the stupid exploit and there should be an all-in-one fix available within the next day or two, along with hopefullyanother patch by Microsoft to fix the worst part of their latest "fix."<br><br>I am SO ready to migrate to Leopard. :grrrr:

BY the way... if you notice in the graphic I posted above - other than the purple bar at the top (yours will likely be blue unless you use themes) - that thetext of the message kinda runs off the edge of the graphic, that is one big clue right there that something is amiss. I noticed that, as well as the fact thatI don't use Windows Firewall and thus wouldn't get that alert to begin with, but by the time I got away from my "WTF-deer-in-the-headlamps"state, it had already forwarded me to their web site.

My 7 yr old son has a hand-me-down dell, on which he's been using Safarifor a year or so. He hasn't had any complaints yet.<br><br>~Joe<br>
