No sympathy for him "unless he had emotional problems"? WTF do you think he did it because it felt good? What an ass..................HJ
You just looking for something to pick on Pete for, HJ? People commit suicide for a variety of reasons (financial, marital, family, job, high on drugs, strung out on drugs, etc...) and while they all have "emotional" problems of some type to drive them to that point, I believe that Pete was referring more to actual medical "mental" problems rather than that the person merely had a bad day. Geez, cut the guy a break...

Doug

Andy (Bluewagon), I had the exact same thought.
It's very sad when we lose someone we enjoyed,
and I for one will have sympathy for him and his loved ones and fans
no matter what actually caused his death.

And I have to say to Chevy57, your comment struck me the same way it struck HJ.
I might not have chosen to call you out on it, but since you put it out there and it's been
responded to already, look at exactly what you typed:

"Suicide is the chickens way out.
What could've been so bad in his life that he had to do that?
Unless he had emotional problems I have no sympathy for him.
Prayers go out to his family who he left behind................... "

So unless he was mentally ill, you have no sympathy for him?
Isn't mental illness just as real and as serious an illness as any physical malady?
So mental illness ("emotional issues") will explain a suicide in your eyes,
but (for example) a terminal cancer diagnosis gets no sympathy from you?

I can think of SO many circumstances that, at the very least,
mitigate (if not justify) a person's reasons for choosing suicide,
how can you hold such an absolutist view?
Black / white, right / wrong ? Sorry, but there are shades of grey in everything.

I truly hope, perhaps for my own selfish reasons, that if it was indeed a suicide,
his mind was clear and this was truly what he felt he needed to do,
perhaps as Bluewagon said to avoid a bleak medical situation.

I don't mean to go on and on here but please remember I spent 20 years of my life
watching my Grandfather, and then my Mother, slowly die in hospital beds in my living room.
I've had MORE than ample time to contemplate what I would do if I were in that position.
At least, I think I know what I would do.
But until you are, until you actually are in that position, you really can't know.
Sympathy? You bet he has my sympathy.

What would have made me post as you did Chevy57?
If he'd committed an act of this magnitide against someone else.
Greg

I've contemplated suicide many times in my life. Believe me, if it were the "chicken's way out" I wouldn't be here...

I might not have chosen to call you out on it
Greg, he easily could have been called out on it (which given the way it was written could be understandable), but he was flat out called an ass. There's been many times that I've seen people post things that made me think the same thing about them (like not crossing the street to pee on someonewho was on fire), but I've never felt it belonged here. John could've very easily made his point - much as you did - without resorting the the namecalling.

Sorry, but there are shades of grey in everything.
Yep, just as there are in Pete's post. Next time he needs to list exactly what constitutes an acceptable reason for taking one's ownlife. Frankly, to give him the benefit of the doubt, I chose not to read Pete's post the way you and John did. Even I said "medical mental" problems in my response to HJ when I have no problem with someone ending their life on their terms for any number ofvarious reasons. I don't necessarily agree with it, and wouldn't do it myself, but understand their position. I think you and John are just assumingwhat he meant - which is fine - but your way of "calling him out" is the far more civil of the two. My issue was the ass crack (yeah, punintended...)

I should note that, noticing Greg's post, my brother has threatened suicide any number of times himself. While I do take the threats seriously, it wouldtotally surprise me if he ever did do it as, like Greg says, he's too much of a chicken to do it. OK, no one jump on me for insinuating that you have tobe "brave" to commit suicide - I'm not. It's just not in my brother's "make-up" to be able to do it.

Doug

BTW - not forgetting the reason for the post, I too was very saddened to hear of Carradine's death (no matter the cause). I always enjoyed his characters- Kung Fu was one of the must see shows for all the neighborhood kids back in the 70's (an then we'd proceed to go out and do our own kung fu on eachother). RIP
HJ,
Did you ever think that maybe I know someone that commited suicide? I can feel what I want. and I would call you some names but I'll be bigger than you.
P.S. that nice nice talk coming from a mod.
-
Doug,
Thanks you get it.
There are many reasons to commit suicide but, really there are NO reasons. There is help for everyone that needs or wants it. The only people that don'tget the help are the ones that don't know they have a problem or don't want help at all.

Pete, I apologize for the ass remark .......Just because I thought it I didn't need to say it.......I made the post then thought about editing it out thenthe phone rang..........After that Doug made a post quoting me so it was useless to edit it out......HJ

Cool Jack, been down that road a time or two!! I've always shared in the saying that "suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem". InGregs case with his family? Different situation I'm sure and he went through hell with it..... Carradine? I dunno, there is some talk going n now of hisdeath being due to an accidental hanging while he was involved in self strangulation while...... Uhhhh...... Well, you know.

Who knows? But...... This is another touchy subject on LBR and that's what we do here, discuss.........
-
All right, HJ apologized, Pete - you cool with that?
Everyone carry on now with the original discussion.
