Re: Kind of wondering why!!
Well, If I did not sell mine, then I would not have the kinda cars I have now. I would have ...... the dozen beaters I started back up with a couple years back. I started back up collecting and bought about a dozen $5 cars, and now have over 130 worth over 10k.
I use to do it with my kids, now my youngest is 14 and could care less about a toy car. I talk redlines, he nods his head, and ignores me. Just dad talking cars.
So, I'm the only one that enjoys looking at my cars in my case. But like most of us, if someone offered you alot for a car, it we be gone, and searching for better one. Example: The staff car I have had for about a year. If someone buys it for what I want, then It will be gone, and I will find me another cool 442 to take its place.
I do have the cars I would never sell, the couple of RAOK I have received. And my Corvettes and 2 Rodger Dodgers that were my oldest sons favorites, since they remind me of him.
So I think alot of us that do not have disposable income for toy cars to look at, have what I call a Cool Rotating Collection.
Re: Kind of wondering why!!
Not much you can do about it..it is what it it.
I do sell redlines once in a while, sometimes I just want to change things up a bit.
Not always do I remember who I bought what from though.
I sold a Green Cord latley and when I posted a price for it I was higher than what it was bought for.
The buyer who bought was very happy though becuase once I remembered the story on it I sold it to him for the same price that I bought it for.
I will continue to sell cars once in a while, but even here on RLOL your listed price is starting to mean nothing. You should see some of the offers I got on some of my sales...haaa
That most times means thier buying it for resale. Those 65 minty shell promos I had up for grabs here on the board a while back.Well I had a member here offer and tell me that
they are only worth 1000.00 bucks.I pretty much told that member to go back to the HWC...LOL

Re: Kind of wondering why!!
If I buy something here or anywhere, it is mine and I can do with it what I want. If I wanna sell it, I sell it. The person who sold it to me has absolutely no right to say anything because I paid the price and took ownership of the item.
I have, however, made deals with certain high end collectors/sellers that if I ever go to sell the items I bought from them, I would give them the first chance to buy it back. This has happened more than just a few times.
I know some members here who do the flipping thing and have pissed off certain selling members because he talked them out of selling a redline to someone else for more money to sell it to him. Then he put it up for sale real soon on the bst and sold it for more money than his 'buddy' sold it to him for.
Kinda made me chuckle when I heard about all the drama surrounding the selling of those redlines.
A chuckle is always nice, and true, when you buy the car it's yours to do with what you want. The point is, (and I'm speaking rhetorically, not to you directly) what kind of person do you want to be known as? Is your reputation important to you? Are you interested in being a positive part of a community or are you just interested in being an opportunist in the interest of profit? People remember, and soon, you don't get those deals anymore.

Steve, I am sure many members here know about the issue that made me 'chuckle'. There are several members here that do the same thing. But for those members that tell a seller "I must have that for my collection" and then flip it...you are 100% correct that their reputation will slowly work its way around the community and once it gets around, those deals will go away.
The general rule to sell by is...if I don't want to sell it, then I don't. Plain and simple.
If I do sell something, then I have no business caring what the buyer does with it. Plain and simple.
Re: Kind of wondering why!!
Thanks for all the input peoples...
I find the board isn't the same as it use to be, and now i know why!
i thought as a community we were all trying to do the same, build a collection! Not get rich off of each other!
Re: Kind of wondering why!!
I used to be a really hardcore "buy everything" type of collector. My styles changed and displays changed over the near 11 year span. But I now don't collect as heavy and I may buy something for myself, it is rare. My recent score was my long-lost Hotwheels City Center. That one ain't goin anywhere! I also flip and "pick" to earn money. I scour junkyards, garage sales, thrift stores, etc. My most recent score was a collection of 174 cars, I kept couple of cars in the lot I bought. But the rest I plan to sell. If I wasn't flipping, I'd still do it as I have about 85% or more of those cars already.
I don't buy Hot Wheels to flip on a regular basis, only because so few sell out of the lot and I end up breaking even or not making enough to make it worth it. My bread and butter is with car parts from junkyards. I have quite a few parts for a '72 Montego GT and a few parts for a '65 Galaxie.
As for people selling cars, it is the seller's reponsibility if they wish to sell the car at that price. If they sell the car dirt cheap, then see it for sale again, thats the SELLER'S problem if they went too low. The buyer got a good deal and what he does with the car after he gets it is his business. I don't buy things from here to flip, but for those who do, its they're business, not mine.
Re: Kind of wondering why!!
heh, a few years back, I had something for sale, and a member approached me with a low ball offer..and told me he needed it for his collection---the last piece he needed!
I sold it for a loss, and I felt good about it.
.
.
.
.
.
Until I saw it on eBay 2 weeks later at more money than my original asking price.
I have no problem with anyone buying my items at the price I am asking--whatever they do with it after is ok, it is theirs----I needed a quick sale, and got the $$ I needed at the time.
HOWEVER, dont grind me down on the price with a LIE, then flip it....

Most of us are trying to build our collections Rick but like the old saying goes, "a few bad apples can screw up the whole bushel" There are many people here and on ebay that strictly buy to try sell for a profit. I have weeded those buyers out of my mind and moved on. Once I find out someone is like that, I consider it a learning experience and move on, never to sell to them again, for any reason.
I hope this little issue won't deter you from collecting and having fun doing it.
You have some amazing redlines and I hope you keep on keeping on!

Re: Kind of wondering why!!
Well I know it's not me!! LOL, I don't sell, I don't have the time to mess with it. I have however sold a car on a rare weak time.
I can see how one could be pissed about getting grinded down then just to see it up for sale for much more........not cool.
Re: Kind of wondering why!!
The cars I buy here are always for my collection. I personally would never ask for a deal on a car to sell. I do however flip cars if I purchase a lot and only need some of the cars(usually on Craigslist, TTP, or eBay), or(and I've done this many times) if I buy a car and have not looked to make sure I have it. I don't buy cars here to flip because I kind of consider this site for collectors to sell to other collectors, and would rather a collector here get the car than me try to flip it. I've gotten some great deals, and given them as well. I always start here when I list cars to let someone here have first crack, then TTP, and if I have to eBay.
I will say my past collecting has been erratic, and I may start listing some cars that I bought here just to leave me some breathing room, and since I've become a Grand Prix junkie I've been able to focus my collecting more and not buy friggin' everything. The GP downside is, I'm getting to the point where the cars I need are all rare and downright expensive. I'm going to sell some non-GP's I have with the hopes of getting any of the GP bows that I started closer to completion.
Don't get me wrong, I understand the reselling to make money to buy more cars philosophy too. The money for hobbies has to come from somewhere, and more times than not, paychecks just don't cover it.
Anyway my $.02.
