The Constitution of the United States is totally non-political, so I believe that I can post it as an educational measure:

Powers of the Legislative Branch (Congress, ie: House of Representatives and Senate):

Article I, Section 8:

Lay and collect taxes;
Borrow money;
Regulate commerce;
Establish rules for naturalization (citizenship);
Coin money and punish counterfeiting;
Establish post offices and post roads;
Promote science and useful arts/protect intellectual property;
Assign inferior court positions (such as circuit courts);
Punishments against international crime;
Declarations of war;
Provide, maintain, and fund armed forces (army, navy, militia);
Rule over Washington, D.C.;
Make all laws regarding above list of powers.

Powers of the Executive Branch (President):

Article II, Section 2:

Commander in Chief;
Make treaties (with 2/3 senate approval);
Appoint ambassadors, supreme court justices, ministers (of public office, such as defense and education)---again with senate confirmation.

--------------

Three points of note:

1) The founding fathers saw congress as the most powerful branch. It was covered first; it was covered in more detail; and congress has the greatest area ofinfluence over national affairs. Heck, two of the three powers given to the president have to be approved by the senate!

2) While the president can declare war for 90 days, congress must approve the continuance of such activity.

3) Things not covered (enumerated) in the constitution are left to the states.
A) Subjects such as abortion are technically states' rights.
B) Subjects such as immigration (specifically regarding "sanctuary cities") are enumerated as federal responsibilities.

I believe we need to keep this information in mind as we vote not only for president/vice-president, but also for congressional seats inNovember.

When the economy was good (during Clinton's presidency and rebounding from 9/11) , look at who had the power to address the economy. In short: WHO WAS INCONGRESS? Not the president. The president just makes suggestions and signs off on the legislation.

When the economy turned south (say, the last couple years), again, look at who was in control of CONGRESS and the measures they took (or didn't take) toaffect that.

On the war, remember that congress members on both sides voted for it. It wasn't just a president. It wasn't just a political party'sagenda.

Then, look at how we are getting out of the war (with VICTORY, I might add), and again look at who voted for the surge (desired victory) and who votedagainst the surge (desired defeat).

--------------------------------------------

Vote.

Vote your conscience.

But please vote based on an informed position of who has done what and who is responsible for what and not based on what CNN/MSNBC/ABC/NBC/CBS/LATimes/NY Times/Washington Post decide to tell you. Because I'll give you a little secret (especially those who believe FOX is biased): the mainstream mediais a wonderful tool (good word choice there) to advance a poli-social agenda by what they choose to tell you and what information they choose to ignore.

Americans are a nation of people that read headlines and don't double check the "facts" they are presented---much less bother to look upinformation the news refuses to give them. These news organizations know it. They are the ones who conditioned the American public to be this way.

Don't let the fact you live in the "information age" blind you. They show bias in what they choose to say, how they choose to say it, and whatthey choose to sweep under the rug as "not important." (Read: We don't want you to find that out and we know you won't go looking on yourown. After all, who's the big, national news organization here anyway? Don't you think we know best what you need to know?)

Keep in mind that alternative sources of information (such as the National Enquirer, for God's sake) have been the ones to break major news aboutpolitical candidates. Meanwhile, the national news orgainizations whistled and ignored the information when it crossed their desks.

While you will hear much about Sarah Palin's "inexperience" or "scandals firing her ex-brother-in-law," ask yourself how many of thosesame news sources have investigated a certain senator's voting record or his political involvement with a known terrorist that ran the Weather Underground.

Be informed before you vote because the national media is doing everything in their power to keep you uninformed.

Joel.

ask yourself how many of those same news sources have investigated a certain senator's voting record or his political involvement with a known terrorist that ran the Weather Underground.
First you have to know what Weather Underground is or was and what they did back in the late 60's, early 70's. Domestic Terrorism. Didn't a member or head of the Underground named Ayers or something like that hold a campaign fundraiser for a political hopeful? You won't hear aboutit on most or nearly ALL the networks.
