This whole discussion reminds me of why I chose, at one time in my life, to be a Vegan. I did so for about three years, but then had to go back to eating meatfor health reasons.

And although I do eat meat now, I eat only as much as I absolutely need, and whenever possible I buy meat / fish / poultry from sources that I have researchedand know practice humane treatment of animals. It is at least twice as expensive, but worth it to me, and since I don't eat that much of it, it's notthat much of a burden.

Andrea, you nailed it; I did not grow up around hunting and, thus, I don't "get" it. I've never even touched a real gun in my life, let aloneshoot one at something living. I've never even been fishing. Yes, I'm one of those spoiled city people who has never had to go beyond the grocery storefor the food that sustains me. I am very humbled, Andrea, by your saying that you rely on your husband's hunting to put food on the table. I think that isjust awesome.

So I do "get" that we are omnivores, at the top of the food chain, and that the consumption of animals is a very natural part of our existence. Giventhat, I also think that Andrea is right that deer and elk that are hunted have much better lives than livestock animals. My primary reason for being a Veganwas the inhumane treatment that farm animals receive, and I was an activist for that cause in my late 20's / 30's. Still am, to a much lesser degree.

So I have no problem with the consumption of animals, but I do have a problem with inhumane treatment. And so, just as with the raising and slaughtering oflivestock, I have no problem with hunting as long as it is carried out in a humane manner.

And what does that mean? To me it simply means limiting the suffering an animal must endure, and always respecting and honoring the animal for the sustenanceit is providing to us. Hunting for the sake of hunting - i.e. "trophy hunting" - is, in my opinion, and put very simply, immoral; a coward'ssport.

I also think "humane treatment" means not glorifying the slaughter. So while I would make no judgement on hunting in general, I find it unnecessary, and in a sense inhumane, and certainly in poor taste, to post pictures that glorify killing, in a public forum.

Just my opinion.

Greg

In the photo, the guy on the ground to the left was taken out by the deer. Amazingly, he got up and attempted to remount thebike to rejoin the race only to discover that he had a hoof shaped hole in the top tube of his carbon fiber frame. When they kill cattle---you know the critters that provide us with an essential part of the White castleexperiance---they chase them down a ramp to the killing floor. At the end of the ramp is a large steel box,big enough to hold two cattle snugly so they cantmove or dodge. The end of the box is open. The catttle run into the box and the open end closes. There is a man they call a "knocker" standing abovethe box on a scaffold. He has a pnuematic gun with a spike. It is the same tool that the killer uses on "No Country for Old Men" He hits the cattle ona sweet spot just above the eyes. They are stunned. The box tilts up and dumps the animals onto the floor which is ankle deep in blood. The shackler chains eachanimal up by one rear hoof and it is hoisted up to the ceiling and attached to a moving chain drive. Then the sticker has to grab a flailing hoof and manage toget in close enough to cut the animals throat without being kicked, and hang a stainless steel bucket on its neck to catch the geyser of blood from thejugular. For some strange reason this was the lowest paying job on the floor. Which meant that university students hiring on for the summer were the poor soulswho ended up sticking cattle. These budding doctors and lawyers would come to the change room at lunch time soaked in blood from head to toe and eyes the sizeof saucers. I don't hunt, only because I don't have that time to commit.

In the glory days of the WWW, there was a website called Manmeat.com, and you could in fact, buy human steaks. We could get right back into the union fight since we all seem so scrappy. Unions have beenweakened over the years in the meat packing industry. Mike, since you used my quote as a springboard...

I'm fully aware of what happens in slaughterhouses, chicken ranches, etc. As an activist, I experienced it firsthand. And I'm also fully aware of howlarge and powerful the meat industry is, and how many livelihoods it provides.

And with all due respect to people like Frank, who I know and have high regard for, both as a person and for what they do to make a living, I would still hopefor more humane treatment of the animals, even if it meant that it put those people out of that particular business. I don't believe that we, as humans, are the most important thing on this planet. In fact, it may actually be the other way around...

And let's face it - we all consume WAY more meat than we need to - probably 3 times as much. And we would all be healthier if we limited meat consumption. And while I would hate to put a lot of people out work, would it really be that big of a loss that there wouldn't have to be some poor miserable personholding a bucket to catch an animal's blood while avoiding being kicked? There are plenty of other things we can do to make a living...

I also am tremendously thankful for farmers. In fact, I'm tremendously thankful for everything on this earth. But I think we are beginning to see that, ashumans, we are not the only thing that matters. And eventually the universe, and this earth, will have its way with us, and there will be nothing we can doabout it, no matter how powerful and important we think we are. And it's all good, and exactly as it should be.

But in the meantime, we are the ones that are taking care of the place, and can in some ways effect the outcome. So my hope is that we can continue to care forthis place to the best of our ability, and treat all things with dignity and respect in the process. I believe that is the only thing that will guarantee ourcontinued survival here.

Greg
