Steve,

Looks great! Just a quick question. I know you are going with a slightly non-stock look, right? Are you going to put the fender welt between the fenders and the body or leave it out?

I am not a body guy, but if you are putting the welt in, how will that affect the fit and alignment of the fenders and the body? If your leaving it out will there be any problems with rubbing or chaffing between the body and fenders?

Bob Jordan

P.S. I've owned a 59 Bettle for years ( at least 20 years) that I bought from the original owner and parked in a garage for storage. Seeing your car has insired me to get serious about getting my car done!

Wow, I just tuned into this thread and I can't believe the extent of your rustoration. I would love to send a car to you for the full massage.

And to address the question about battery location posted about five pages back, just switch to an Optima battery. It uses dry cell technology and there's no acid to leak.
Quote:
Oh man, a flat black Rat Rod VW would be SO COOL!!

Steve, I don't know if you've been hanging with the VW crowd lately, but that look is totally played out. You see at least two new ones show up at every show. It's monkey see, monkey do.

My vote is for a stock restoration.
Here's a shot of my latest acquisition, a '52 Standard barn find. It looks decent and all the hard-to-find parts are there, but deep down it could use some of Steve's metal magic!

I pretty much already knew how the car looked from looking through this thread.
Quote:
if you are putting the welt in, how will that affect the fit and alignment of the fenders and the body? If your leaving it out will there be any problems with rubbing or chaffing between the body and fenders?

I know Steve gave a great answer, but I'll just add that the fender welts don't make much of a difference as far as fit, other than helping to make two surfaces that didn't fit so well to begin with fit even better.

The most important thing you need to do is be sure the bottom edges of the fenders align with the bottom of the apron, and you may want to trial fit the running boards to make sure all the holes align (though it's no big deal to trim or tweak the boards to fit). And you must have the fender welting installed to fill the gaps between the bolts. I don't know anybody who leaves it off.

That car will be a faithful friend. I've found that VWs never forget those who did kind deeds for them.
