A hic road Jeff? You mean a gravel road where us HICKS live?

Honestly I'd prefer a hic road over the 401 going through TO anyday.

As I was driving through the darkness to the Skyway show ,early in the morning, back in October Jeff,on the 401 even..I seen 2 deerjust recently hit,and about 5 more ready to walk onto the road. This isn't just a hic road problem.

Interesting opinions coming out of this thread. Pretty clear to see how some people think.

Meat is good, meat is OK...but don't be shooting anything.
Deer only cross hic roads..

Only on LBR...

F.

This whole discussion reminds me of why I chose, at one time in my life, to be a Vegan. I did so for about three years, but then had to go back to eating meatfor health reasons.

And although I do eat meat now, I eat only as much as I absolutely need, and whenever possible I buy meat / fish / poultry from sources that I have researchedand know practice humane treatment of animals. It is at least twice as expensive, but worth it to me, and since I don't eat that much of it, it's notthat much of a burden.

Andrea, you nailed it; I did not grow up around hunting and, thus, I don't "get" it. I've never even touched a real gun in my life, let aloneshoot one at something living. I've never even been fishing. Yes, I'm one of those spoiled city people who has never had to go beyond the grocery storefor the food that sustains me. I am very humbled, Andrea, by your saying that you rely on your husband's hunting to put food on the table. I think that isjust awesome.

So I do "get" that we are omnivores, at the top of the food chain, and that the consumption of animals is a very natural part of our existence. Giventhat, I also think that Andrea is right that deer and elk that are hunted have much better lives than livestock animals. My primary reason for being a Veganwas the inhumane treatment that farm animals receive, and I was an activist for that cause in my late 20's / 30's. Still am, to a much lesser degree.

So I have no problem with the consumption of animals, but I do have a problem with inhumane treatment. And so, just as with the raising and slaughtering oflivestock, I have no problem with hunting as long as it is carried out in a humane manner.

And what does that mean? To me it simply means limiting the suffering an animal must endure, and always respecting and honoring the animal for the sustenanceit is providing to us. Hunting for the sake of hunting - i.e. "trophy hunting" - is, in my opinion, and put very simply, immoral; a coward'ssport.

I also think "humane treatment" means not glorifying the slaughter. So while I would make no judgement on hunting in general, I find it unnecessary, and in a sense inhumane, and certainly in poor taste, to post pictures that glorify killing, in a public forum.

Just my opinion.

Greg

Well said.
There is a great scene at the beginning of the movie "Last of the Mohicans" where three men are hunting a deer. They are literally chasing it throughthe woods on foot, prepping their muzzle loading rifles while at a full sprint. They get it where they want and fell it with one shot. Before doing anythingwith the animal, they all kneel around it and honor it for it's fight, and thank it for its sacrifice that will sustain them. Very humbling stuff.

Steve

Right on Frank!

Why shoot anything that can't shoot back???????????
It's some mighty fine good eats! Dear meat Taco's are mmm mmm mmm good. Mass slaughter of cows, chickens, rabbit, etc..... You ever seenthe way they are processed? Id rather have a bullet to kill me fast than hung upside down from my feet and my head ripped off like a chicken. Hunting is morehumane than any meat processing plant ever will be. Beef, chicken, pork, (moose ( some of the best burgers and steaks you will ever eat), deer, eat it all.

Here is a video of a chicken plant.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6r9xxREqL-I

Steve,

Even though its fictional one must watch the movie "Powder". Where the hunter shoots the deer and sez it doesn't suffer and then the kid placeshis hand on the deer as a medium to the hunter...e'nuff said.

I don't hunt but if they did not the deer population in this area would be out of whack and quite a few would starve-out...

C

Man oh man what did I start???

I'm not sure but was there a photo by Steve Grimm (?) where a deer ran across hitting a bicyclist (or something to that effect)?
