Hey Jeff,
I have paid anywhere from 9-14 percent maybe a little more or less to sell on ebay. Last time I sold a 750.00 doller redline on ebay, I got hit with 9 percentjust for final value fees and listing fees, and then if you want to do featured plus, thats another 1-4 percent in some cases, and then 3+ percent for paypal, there is 14 percent right there. I know of people lately paying 15-16 percent with the listing fees, final value fees, and paypal fees. Hope that cleared it upfor you.
Eric
How can they force you?? Think about it, you win my auction and "ask the seller a question" I give you my mailing address, and you send a MO. Theycan't stop it unless they stop us from communicating.
Good point Pete, but you know how half them ebayers before you even get a chance to message them, they paypal you right away, so i don't know how thatwould work, espceially if it was paypal only , then everyone would pay even faster, lol. I think the best bet would be to, when you get the ebay invoice whenyour selling, you put in the message to the buyer right there, heres my number or my address, send me a money order, or if you want to use pyapal, add 3percent, thats how I would do it. I have been seeing everyone jacking up the shipping fees lately to cover paypal fees.
Eric
Eric,
I don't think you understand the mathematics...here is what the final value fees are...

8.75% of the initial $25.00 ($2.19), plus 3.50% of the remaining closing value balance($25.01 - $1,000.00)

A far cry from what you said about 9% of the final sales price...featured auction is soley for exposure that is at your choice, not a mandatory cost so youcan't blame that cost on ebay.

There are instances where PP in factdoes indirectly make money from shipping charges. When I send money from my bank in Canada to PP, Canadian currency is transferred. Every item I've everbought on eBay except for 2 came from the US where sellers obviously would like payment in $US. I've bought about 195 items where the total shipping feesmay be at least $1500 collectively. PP takes a .0325% fee for converting the cash to $US. That's about $50 from me alone only for the conversion. If youmultiply that by 1,000,000 consumers, theres 50 million dollars.

Also, it takes 6-8 business days for that money to appear in my PP account, but, it leaves my bank account in 2 days. Somebody other than me and my bankaccount has my money for 6 to 8 days, and is making interest from that. I'm not sure if it's PP or not, but somebody is, just as a lawyers trustaccount makes money from deposited cash, but doesn't tell you it is. I suspect once my money leaves my bank, it's in PP's possession, but I'mnot sure about that. It may be in possession of some sort of money transfer company, which could even be a subsidiary of PP as PP is a subsidiary of eBay, andall are making a small percentage.

And also, I really do prefer PP as when I'm either paying or receiving as payment is always virtually instant. I don't have to monkey around drivingto banks or post offices to send or cash cheques or m.o.'s, or drive, ride a bicycle or walk 1000 miles to pay for and pick up a $10 item. We're allspoiled folks. I've been lucky to this point and have never lost money.

There is also a few instances when I opted to mail currency across the border to US sellers. I only bid on their stuff if they have a high number of pointsand a 'Very' high percentage, like 99.8 or higher. I always give the seller the benefit of the doubt on the .02 percent negative feedback as somebuyers are total A-Holes who are quick to neg someone for the slightest problem without trying to resolve it. I've even repeated business with 2 of themand never got burned. A seller usernamed dadron where I bought a $67 Cal Custon Camaro 2nd time round, and another seller from R.I. or somewhere out there bythe username of htfdc where I've sent similar amounts of cash several times.

I don't blame anyone who would prefer to receive cheques or money orders if that's what works for them.

And also, if I send anything from Canada to anywhere in the world, postal rates are high because insurance is mandatory on parcels. It costs $6.45 to send asmall parcel which can contain up to 250 grams or maybe 2 or 3 blisters or loose cars to the US. If something goes lost and PP hits me, I in turn hit the PostOffice for reimbursement. I've never had to do that though as I've been lucky enough to have dealt with straight shootin' honest people. And aspreviously mentioned, it my perogative to buy or sell on eBay, no-one elses.

And although my father wasn't Jewish, he, as a young boy in Poland in 1939 had his life f'd up by Nazis, so maybe that reference is just a little heavyfor some. Of course, I can read, listen to, or talk about anything, so it doesn't bother me, but I can understand some people's reaction to that. I seethat some of the barbs flying around on RLOL really haven't subsided fully since I've been gone.

Andy

Eric,
You typed above telling me ebay charged you 9% of $750.00. That figures out to .09 x $750.00 = $67.50

Here's the way to figure final value sales fees at the rate posted by ebay here... http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/fees.html

..... 2.19 ( 8.75% x $25.00 )
+ 25.38 (3.5% x $725.00 )
$ 27.57

This is how you figure the Final Value Sales Fees. Check your invoices and you will see this is the formula they use to charge you the fees.

Just trying to help...

First, you can never state add 3% for paypal fees on any ebay auction or invoice. That is a violation. What you do , is add that fee tothe shipping. So if 1 lb. priority is 4.80, you state a slightly higher price for shipping. $5.00 or 5.50 or 6.00... etc.

I also have a feeling that Ebay will make a change and you will NOT see the buyer's email address anymore. All emails would be through ebay and they willprobably do something that will let them know when you write an email address.. Of course, ebay will state that they are now blocking email addresses toprevent a pervert from molesting you (or some other BS excuse... and not the truth... that they are stopping you from asking for a money order.)

I never pay extra for anything. I haven't listed a truly rare item but if I did have an antique worth hundreds of dollars , I might pay for the featuredauction.

maribell
Heres the Paypal calculator I use..................

http://ppcalc.com/
Half of what you did is right Jeff, but you got the final value thing down wrong here is what just the final value fee was alone

Aug-09-08 10:22:00 PDT

1969 Olive Beach Bomb BP, Rare and Minty, MIB !!!!!
Final price: $750.00 (Auction)

130245471451

Final Value Fee

$27.56

Not including listing fees, featured auctions or paypal fees. It sure in the hell was not $ 2.19 like you said . And it almost seems like you are trying toback ebay and their BS fees, I mean do you like paying these fees?
Eric
