To me it simply means limiting the suffering an animal must endure, and always respecting and honoring the animal for the sustenance it is providing to us. Hunting for the sake of hunting - i.e. "trophy hunting" - is, in my opinion, and put very simply, immoral; a coward's sport.
I would have to agree with this position Greg. Well said.
There is a great scene at the beginning of the movie "Last of the Mohicans" where three men are hunting a deer. They are literally chasing it through the woods on foot, prepping their muzzle loading rifles while at a full sprint. They get it where they want and fell it with one shot. Before doing anything with the animal, they all kneel around it and honor it for it's fight, and thank it for its sacrifice that will sustain them. Very humbling stuff.

Steve

Well, I hope the deer was consoled. When they kill cattle---you know the critters that provide us with an essential part of the White castleexperiance---they chase them down a ramp to the killing floor. At the end of the ramp is a large steel box,big enough to hold two cattle snugly so they cantmove or dodge. The end of the box is open. The catttle run into the box and the open end closes. There is a man they call a "knocker" standing abovethe box on a scaffold. He has a pnuematic gun with a spike. It is the same tool that the killer uses on "No Country for Old Men" He hits the cattle ona sweet spot just above the eyes. They are stunned. The box tilts up and dumps the animals onto the floor which is ankle deep in blood. The shackler chains eachanimal up by one rear hoof and it is hoisted up to the ceiling and attached to a moving chain drive. Then the sticker has to grab a flailing hoof and manage toget in close enough to cut the animals throat without being kicked, and hang a stainless steel bucket on its neck to catch the geyser of blood from thejugular. For some strange reason this was the lowest paying job on the floor. Which meant that university students hiring on for the summer were the poor soulswho ended up sticking cattle. These budding doctors and lawyers would come to the change room at lunch time soaked in blood from head to toe and eyes the sizeof saucers. We would howl.
I tell this story to anyone who is nutty enough to argue that it is fine to eat burgers but bad to kill a defenseless wild animal for food or even as atrophy provided that the meat is still used. I like burgers too. And steaks.---mike

Mike,
Do people think that the killing floor of a packing plant is actually some kind of serene experience?..lol. It's a slaughter house..and it's named thatfor good reason.
I mean,it's meat. It comes from Animals. They have to go through there before consumers can get that meat on the table, or in that hunk of crap they callmeat at Mickey D's.

I farm,I raise beef..I know what happens. It's all about production at these plants,at the most cheapest cost....THAT is the bottom line...BAR NONE.

What pisses me off is that since I graduated college in 82,we've been selling cattle for basically the same price for the last 26 years. Some yearsbetter, some years worse..But the costs of production always go up,and the margins always shrink.
Yet the price rarely goes down in the stores...

Again,ALL this is really off the path of the original subject..so let's not wander too much..but I just felt I had to reply.

If you ate today,Thank a farmer.

F~
I don't hunt, only because I don't have that time to commit.

In the glory days of the WWW, there was a website called Manmeat.com, and you could in fact, buy human steaks. Yep, I tried hard to get the boys to go in apackage deal, but they all whined about it, so I never ordered. They're not around anymore, sadly. So, Bambie didn't make it out of the woods, welleither did Joe, Bob, or Cindy for that matter. All ended up on the plate in the end. Chew on that.......

We could get right back into the union fight since we all seem so scrappy. When I quit the killing floorin 1985 or there abouts the union wage was about twelve dollars an hour.Which was good money.I was able to buy my house on the wages I earned. Unions have beenweakened over the years in the meat packing industry. Today about twenty-five years later, the going rate is about ten dollars an hour.My home has gone up 400per cent in cost. Not too many people in that industry buying houses now--- or new Chevrolets.
I am very thankful for farmers so I won't talk about the smells and sounds of the killing floor. I don't want everyone eating vegetables.---mike

Mike, since you used my quote as a springboard...

I'm fully aware of what happens in slaughterhouses, chicken ranches, etc. As an activist, I experienced it firsthand. And I'm also fully aware of howlarge and powerful the meat industry is, and how many livelihoods it provides.

And with all due respect to people like Frank, who I know and have high regard for, both as a person and for what they do to make a living, I would still hopefor more humane treatment of the animals, even if it meant that it put those people out of that particular business. I don't believe that we, as humans, are the most important thing on this planet. In fact, it may actually be the other way around...

And let's face it - we all consume WAY more meat than we need to - probably 3 times as much. And we would all be healthier if we limited meat consumption. And while I would hate to put a lot of people out work, would it really be that big of a loss that there wouldn't have to be some poor miserable personholding a bucket to catch an animal's blood while avoiding being kicked? There are plenty of other things we can do to make a living...

I also am tremendously thankful for farmers. In fact, I'm tremendously thankful for everything on this earth. But I think we are beginning to see that, ashumans, we are not the only thing that matters. And eventually the universe, and this earth, will have its way with us, and there will be nothing we can doabout it, no matter how powerful and important we think we are. And it's all good, and exactly as it should be.

But in the meantime, we are the ones that are taking care of the place, and can in some ways effect the outcome. So my hope is that we can continue to care forthis place to the best of our ability, and treat all things with dignity and respect in the process. I believe that is the only thing that will guarantee ourcontinued survival here.

Greg
i like meat, no wait i love meat, rare meat. i don't hunt but have nothing against those who as long as its for the meat and not to just kill. personallythere are certain types of people i could take a shot at before i could kill an animal. lets not forget this classic

deer hunting
