RushCon 2012!!! AND Some Concert Related Stories!
This event is SO cool....
Anyone ever been to one...?
One can ACTUALLY play Neil Peart's 1st drum kit used on the his 1st U.S. tour with Rush. The kit was used for the 2112 Tour. $10 gets you a pic at the kit,...$20 gets you a pic 'playing' the kit!
ANYONE know anything about this cover band Lotus Land....? Buddy looks oddly enough like Geddy!
:DLINK: http://www.rushcon.org/events.html
I'm sure if my memory serves me right, that was the kit he used for the concert we attended at Kitchener Aud. It's the tic beside the Nazareth tic,....which ALSO was a killer concert! Anyone ever hear of Savoy Brown....? lol......SB was HEAVY s&?t back then.
I'm glad he replaced the original drummer. I don't think Rush would have gone as far as they did without him....He's half the band! I guess you could say..... 'Three of a Perfect Pair'. Kudos to the person who knows what THAT reference is to, as my favorite drummer (Bruford..... Collins too...it's a toss up) plays occassionally for THAT band (not Rush).
Met him at a Crimson concert at Massey Hall in TO. THAT was the pinnacle event of my ENTIRE life!
Seen Rush 4 or 5 times since they first appeared. I was 15 or 16 (1975) when as a fledgling farty-assed bar-band they played a dance at my high school with Rutsey on drums!
Concert I MOST would liked to have attended EVER.........GENESIS at Knebworth England w/guest drummer: BILL BRUFORD for the Seconds Out tour..........KILLER!!!
***Funny Story: Genesis played a 2 nighter at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto summer of 1980 for the Duke tour. I grabbed my sweetie of the day and we headed down. Had time to kill in the afternoon, so I said "Let's sneak into the arena and see what's up. Maybe we can covertly watch the sound check,...OR...if nobody was around,....sneak up on the stage and play both Phil's and Chester Thompson's drum kits"... at risk of being arrested! Woulda been a dream come true!!! Playing the drum kits that is....not the getting arrested thing! :D
That would have been about the closest I could have EVER dreamed of getting near or meeting Phil!We didn't get ANY further than an entrance to the back stage area before some hairy bearded dude stopped us and asked what we were doing there....... I played dumb and said we were lost lol... Turned out to be Phil's drum tuner....:O He said we had to leave NOW!!! I struck up a friendly with him, and wound up with a pair of Phil's timbale sticks and a broken baseball bat size 'CLUB' that Chester broke the night previous....lol....
Oh well....never got what I came for...BUT,...never got arrested either. Believe it or not,.......Chester is actually one of the drummers that PHIL idolizes...
Anyhow...Saved almost ALL of my stubbs since...
...some notable concerts:
Jethro Tull and U.K.
King Crimson
Floyd.......so good we went back a 2nd night of a 3 nighter in TO.
GENESIS
Boston,...opener: Rick Derringer :D Rock and Roll Hootchie Koo
Toledo Speedway Jam,....BOC, Molly Hatchet,...don't remember the rest...we were all so hammered on that yankee beer (water) after we knocked off all the couple of 24s of the Molson Canadian we brought with us :Dand others.
Let's hear YOUR stories of concerts YOU would have liked to have seen but missed,....and/or YOUR brushes with musical fame!
Halloween Bash tic: Big party we had in our house in Edmonton in 1981. About 250 bought tics and showed up...CRAZY
Never even got shut down by the police,...even considering on the tic was printed BYOB & D!!! :D

Re: RushCon 2012!!! AND Some Concert Related Stories!
I have been a fan of Rush since I was 13 back in 1983. My parents listened to country music back then which never did much for me. It's no wonder I was a late bloomer when it came to music. Summer of 1983, I attend church camp. Late one night all the guys get together to tell stories and listen to music. One of the guys brought Rush - Exit Stage Left. After listening to just a few tracks, I was hooked. My birthday was in August so a buddy of mine bought me that cassette for my birthday. I wore out two of them over time. It would be another 4 years before I was allowed to go to a concert. I did save all of my stubs and bought programs from each concet as well. Here are some notables.
1st concert - Iron Maiden/Waysted
1st Rush concert - 1987's Hold Your Fire at the Coliseum in Richfield which has since been torn down.
Monsters of Rock - Kingdom Come, Dokken, Metallica, Scorpions and Van Halen. I was fortunate enough to meet Jason Newsted of Metallica backstage. He autographed my ticket stub for me. Also met two of the guys from Kingdom Come.
Best Rush concert - Time Machine Tour. Rush played Moving pictures in its entirety as well as others. Moving pictures is arguably one of the greatest albums of all time. I also scored the best seat I've ever had for Rush - 4th row center. Totally changed my perspective on the whole concert experience.
Glad I saw them before it was too late - I was fortunate to have seen Black Sabbath/Heaven & Hell with Ronnie James Dio on vocals twice before he passed away. A great concert with great friends! Thanks John, Connie and Ian.
Other memorable concerts - Metallica's And Justice For All tour, Megadeth's United Abominations tour and Pink Floyd in 1988.
I will be attending the Rush Clockwork Angels tour which stops in Cleveland in two weeks on the 28th. I again scored great seats.
Regards, Roy
Me at a past Nationals wearing my Rush garb about to liberate a yellow Vicky. Good times! Nitrojohnny was behind the camera. Note the Nitro angle.

4th row center....? Wicked seats!!!! Man!
I know how that is.....Saw ZZ Top about the same position...maybe 5 or six back center...that Dusty Hill was one Ugly dude...:D Ouch.... GREAT bass player...perfect match for Billy Gibbons...and Dusty too!
Moving Pictures.....YES!!!!!
Snakes and Arrows.....????...a NO on that one maybe....Haven't heard it all,...but what I have heard did NOT impress me...I fear they're falling away......If they stick to the old stuff on tour,...they should do fine! You can NEVER tire of LIVE Rush!!!
Now...to that yellow Vicky .....THAT....is sweet!!!
Re: RushCon 2012!!! AND Some Concert Related Stories!
Oh....One more thing.....About that Nitro Camera angle............ Was Johnny thinking it was a Batman TV series crime scene....? LOL!
Liberating ANY red is practically a crime...:D
Re: RushCon 2012!!! AND Some Concert Related Stories!
You are one up on me my friend. You actually saw them prior to fame & fortune with John Rutsey providing the rythym. Now that's a good story.
Regards, Roy
Vicky bow in progress. I still own the liberated yellow.

Re: RushCon 2012!!! AND Some Concert Related Stories!
Snakes & Arrows is one of their better modern day albums. Many good tunes included. I have to admit that it does take a few listens for me to warm up to new material but that goes with just about any bands music for me.
Re: RushCon 2012!!! AND Some Concert Related Stories!
Best band ever in my opinion, and still NOT in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a true pity. They should have been in years ago.
Great band live, and their first few albums are one's I still listen to today. Pass on the new stuff, Alex just doesn't cut loose on the new stuff like he did in the past. This band inspired many. Listen to Dream Theater (another fav of mine), obviously inspired by Rush...
My favorite Rush song is "The Camera Eye", the tempo changes are fantastic!
Re: RushCon 2012!!! AND Some Concert Related Stories!
Roy: I'll have to blow a fattie or 2 then listen to Snakes. You are right, some stuff takes a listening to in order to grasp it. I saw some concert show recently on TV about it. I think it too was entitled Snakes and Arrows. Look it up! It was cool!
By the way....nice redline interlude with the Vicky bow pic....:D
Scott: That IS a GREAT tune.......They are MASTERS of the time changes,...chord progressions and the like too!
Check this interview out. The interviewer's name is Gian Ghomeshi (spell check on that...lol...) He's IRANIAN....lol......does an interview show on CBC radio every morning. Great interviews,...but the guy tends to ramble a bit at times. He had Billy Bob Thornton on there one morning....they got into it after he asked Thornton about something unrelated to the interview. Billy Bob dumped ALL over him on the air....Type in Billy Bob Thornton and the letter Q. Should be there...
It's a LONG, and GREAT interview (Rush that is),...but I think you can listen to it in the background while doing other stuff. If not....then go to cbc.ca and look into the Q archives and listen on the media player in the background....
