Bob, as I understand it, you're heading off target when drilling out the car. I use the 1/16 bit to make a pilot hole at least as deep as the base, sometimes farther, so that the larger bit stays straight. I use a pin vise, not a power drill. More control that way. Hope this helps.

Lorne

I never drill. I use a 1/16 carbide ball cutter at high speed in the Dremel. You can very carefully work down into the post head until the rim separates, and not a chance of drilling too far or of damaging the base.

- E
Hey, can someone post a picture of the 1/16 carbide ball cutter?... Not sure exactly what I would be looking for........ Love this site.... Learn more and more every day.... Seems to be a cool community

might not work for you but this works for me, I use very expensive and sharp drill bits, for maximum cutting performance, after all die cast is a light pot metal not heavy steel. I t actually is very hard on drill bits to drill metals that are not super high grade steel. I use a smaller one for a pilot hole then go bigger and bigger until I have the right size bit used. I use modeling clay to form to the car body as a hold in a square box. I use a light steady pressure when drilling with a dremel flexible extension cable, cause it is lighter and more flexible than the unit itself. when I get close to the base I stop and try to give it a slight pry to try and pop the body off. if it does then on the pop on I drill carefully through a bit and test try the rivit.
