70's Glam/Rock
I've been cruising You Tube a lot lately and looking up various bands like the ones in these videos.
Some of them are pretty funny, but there's also some really great music. I miss those days.
Enjoy,
John
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFKZNo-mmpg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UODv3aCVxg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8oGyGo1q-k
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MePaQmP88g
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ylww2dOW7fg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrBDivsSe3k
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urEVpwH6dbg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUsUI-txQbM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROxDBpMCffU

The Sweet.... Ballroom Blitz... That's a cool song and vid !!!! KISS... I forgot they played at Super Bowl 33...

Steve
-
I have a secret....... I've always hated to admit it. I really like Roxy Music. LOL

I can admit I'm openly Mott the Hoople fan.

There is a pretty cool The Sweet documentary somewhere. I think it's on YouTube somewhere.
-
There's nothing wrong with liking Roxy Music. If you read enough music publications, you get to know that some of the most talented and important artistsof the music world have all been influenced by such "embarrassing" acts such as The Carpenters. It takes the sting out of liking "Rainy Days andMondays" knowing that Billy Corgan and Eddie Vedder like it too.

Besides, "Avalon" was one of the most romantic and sensuous albums ever made. And it was a huge inspiration to dozens of bands that you would neverthink of. It has made Rolling Stone magazine's "Greatest Albums Ever" list a few times. And Roxy Music was a great band in their own right. I ownseveral CD's.
-
Embarrassing??? Dude, you are a moron.... And i actually LIKE you!!!! Karen Carpenter is THE best female vocalist who has ever lived.... Listen to the range, listen to the clarity, LISTEN to the emotion............ Avalon, PLEASE!!!!! Crap on it's best day........ Give a listen to Karen's"Solitare" sometime and get some education to REAL music....... Freakin' KIDS!!!!!

Later, Dave

You have GOT to be kidding me........ What kind of influence do you have to be under to have that entertain you??? Mushrooms, acid, Borax, Drano??? That isBRUTAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAGGHHHHHH!!!!!!! MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!

Later, Dave
-
hee hee..this is brutal...

At least the girl could SING to her last dying breath........ That Roxy crap is DOA on it's best day.

Later, Dave

As the author of this thread, I'd like to say a couple things.
I am a fan most of these bands, especially Roxy Music, Bowie & Mott The Hoople. Not so much for The Sweet except for a couple tunes. I intended to startthis thread because I know many of the Redline Collectors I've met over the years are the same age as me and fans of this type of music (Glam), and manyother Classic Rock bands too. A common thing for me at Hot Wheels Conventions is when your hanging out with friends in your rooms late night and are donetalking Redlines, the conversation many times turns to music.
This was supposed to be an enjoyable thread, not a battle between board members. Could we try and keep it that way or let the thread drop off and go away?
By the way Dave, the music sounds just as good now without a buzz as it did back then with the mushrooms & acid. I never tried Borax or Drano. How is it?
Thanks,
John

In agreement here, John.

The word "embarrassing" was in quotation marks for a reason, Dave. So no, I'm not a moron. But you sure can be. And by the way, I like you, too!

Anita,
Great Roxy tune with Ladytron and the Bowie just makes me miss Mick Ronson RIP even more.
John
-
I saw Mick Ronson perform live with Ian Hunter once. Indeed a great guitar player.
-
The only video (of John's) that I disagree with being glam is the one of Lou Reed. Just my opinion, John =) Alice Cooper is the original shock rocker, KISSthe original Show Rockers, and I consider Bowie the original Glam Rocker. I never noticed before how much influence the styles of clothing and mannerisms (andmakeup) of those in the earlier videos affected the "official?" glam rock of the 80s. I didn't care much for 80s glam during the 80s but over thepast few years, I've developed a good appreciation for it.

Alice Cooper was one of the big influences in my early guitar playing, as were the likes of Led Zeppelin and BTO. I also learned a bit of funk back then that Ihave to say was a huge influence in a funkpunk band I once played in.

Gregg: I agree, Ian Hunter is fantastic. I have a lot of guitar heroes. Real, actual guitars, that is.
-
Oh, Kitty! Reed did indeed go through a "glam" period. See CD inserts here: The blurriness is not me. That's the album. But most of know and love him more as this:
This is a dirty masterpiece.

Great thread!

The SWEET was the first concert I saw...on the "Action" tour in 1975 or '76. My dad took me to the show and complained about the "funnysmelling handrolled cigarettes" all night!

I loved all those bands, esp MOTT and Lou Reed. Lou's "Rock and Roll Animal" is a masterpiece of live recording and playing (he was backed by thestudio hired gun/hotshot guys from Alice Cooper). If you like that record the rest of the show was released as "Lou Reed Live," but I'm not sureif it has gotten the remastering treatment that "Animal" recently received. It's funny, you can hear someone yell, "Lou Reed sucks,"right after "Sad Song." It has a great version of "Waiting For My Man."
-
Great music from a great era.

Roxy Music was one of the most under-rated (especially here in the States) bands of all time. Avalon is still to this day, in my opinion, one of the bestalbums of all time. Brian Ferry's solo effort Boys And Girls is equally as good, and continued in the same direction. But with David Gilmour handling muchof the guitar work. (particularly the song Slaave To Love. Tell me thatisn't a beautiful work of art) I know that there are some of us here who love Duran Duran - Karen!- Give Roxy a listen and a look, to see where so many ofthe British acts of the 80s based their musical and visual influences.
-
I wasn't really into The New York Dolls (below) but I did think David Johanssons "In Style" was a really good album. I didn't think much ofBuster but you have to pay the bills I guess. LOL

I kinda see Glam as a UK beast with Bowie and Marc Bolan/T.Rex atop the two headed monster---Lou Reed made a lousy record after leaving VU then brought inBowie to produce Transformer---I rode my Dad's exercise bike in the basement to an 8-track of Lou Reed's Rock 'N Roll Animal (terrific speedsreached during the finale of Rock And Roll)---Love the Roxy Music stuff and the Ferry stuff that followed especially Mamouna, co-produced with Robin Trower andloaded with Eno sonic stuff---I recently picked up a strange mutli-image thing by Brian Eno called 77 Million Paintings, designed to plug into yourcomputer---ToM/NOLa

This is a great thread - thanks for starting it up John! If any of you have ever been to a convention, one of the things you can count on is cool musicwhenever you walk into John and Connie's room.
I was too young to have been into these bands in their heyday, but all the tunes are familiar and hearing them takes me back. As Kitty said, I can also see theinfluences that appeared in other bands that followed.
Great stuff! Dave (daspanic), you should start your own thread just about your music memories from your childhood on up to the Panic years. I love your storiesman, and you're a good story teller to boot.

Steve

Lou's "Rock and Roll Animal" is a masterpiece of live recording and playing (he was backed by the studio hired gun/hotshot guys from Alice Cooper).
I'll never forget seeing Steve Hunter & Dick Wagner having a guitar duel on stage during the Welcome To My Nightmare Tour.
John
-
Great Thread! I once heard, It may be a rumor that either Hunter or Wagner did both guitar solo's on Aerosmith's "Train kept a Rollin"

Rich
-
Gregg: whoa! I stand corrected. I totally forgot about that. I recognise the cover art pics. He looks a lot better in "normal" mode heh

Rich, I definitely would like to know more about that. Steve Perry is one of those aforementioned guitar heroes.
-
I think you mean Joe Perry. Steve Perry sang for Journey.

And Rich, I never heard that rumour. But when Joe Perry was asked who his favorite guitar player is, he answered: "Brad Whitford."
-
DOH. Too much on my mind again. Yes, Joe Perry. I had to look at my last post to be sure I said Steve. Daaaaayammmm!
-
gotta hear more about this solo work with Gilmour... just bought his most recent work and am curious about what other bands he contributed to and such...

since its not necessarily glam probably best you YUKU that to me or call if you've got my number... just outta respect for John and his thread... thanks inadvance!

A.
-
I got a friend who was Joe Perry's sound man through the Joe Perry Project years. He has quiet a few stories to tell. One night while out drinking, He hadtold me this story about the "Alice Cooper boys" being hired to lay down some guitar tracks for the "Aerosmith boys" during the Get YourWings sessions. It's interesting because I've never known Joe Perry to be so clean with his guitar playing now and especially then. Listen to thesolo's and it definitely isn't Brad Whitford. Believe me, I'm a HUGE Aerosmith fan! I've met them many, many times, had dinner with them once, see them alot around the area before I moved to Rhode Island. I hated to believe the story myself.

Asa, Check out Pete Townsends "Give Blood" track. Around 1987 or 88. Not certain. That's all Gilmore!!!!

Rich
-
-
Just the same, that don't make it true just because one guy said so over drinks. Nevertheless, an interesting, though unproven rumour.
-
Regarding the "hired gun" brought in to play for Joe Perry thing: I don't know about this particular instance, and just as Gregg said above:

that don't make it true just because one guy said so over drinks

However: I can honestly say that this is (was) standard industry procedure, especially in cases of a young group's first major label effort. I can think ofplenty of times in which it was the poor drummer who had to step aside in the studio. In other cases band members' parts weren't replaced per se, butringers were brought in to perform uncredited solos.

Okay, that's enough of my "rock and roll mythology debunking" for now!

Great thread Great music

I'm actually going to see Lou next month at the Calvin in Northampton, MA. Very cool thread John. Haven't listened to some of these artists in a long time. Especially Slade.
Dave.
-
I brought my brother's copy of Sladest to hear in our 8th grade music class. (My pal Dean brought a Yes album) Our General Music teacher did not know whatelse to with us by the end of the 1975 school year---ToM/NOLa---PS Look for my 1000th post over on Redliners Unite

John and I have talked about these bands for years now. In fact, Roxy Music did a tour in 2001 with all original members minus Eno. The first gig on that tourwas in my backyard at the Tweeter Center in Camden NJ (Camden's right across the Delaware River from Philly). They were UNREAL. I've been listening tothem since 72/73.

I didn't think there were this many Roxy fans here on this site. It's very warming to my heart

Anita-tremendous video. I thought I was going nuts for a while there as they didn't show Eno until near the end. There was a rumor that Roxy was going totry to tour again with Eno. I guess it fell apart.

Back in '72, Bowie and the Spiders from Mars came to Philly for a 3 night gig at the Tower Theater. That was for a Tues, Wed, and Thurs. Ironically, Mottwas booked for that Monday. Yes, I went all 4 nights. When Mott was playing, Bowie came on unannounced playing his little sax in the background on "Allthe Young Dudes" and singing. I can still here him saying "carry their ludes-boogaloo dudes-carry their ludes".

As far as Lou Reed...the very first rock group I ever saw was the Velevt Underground and Nico. That was in '66. That was still the Andy WarholVelvet's. Anyway, very recently some lost recordings from the Underground recorded live from the Gymnasium were found. There's a 19 minute version ofSister Ray. Here's the addy for downloads (hope this works). Hey Allan---Thanx for addy about VU. I had no idea you had caught them so early on. I have seen some cool bands over the years but Lou Reed and Roxy and Bowiehave all somehow eluded me. My brother has had better luck---he saw Lou in KC during the Bells tour and Roxy Music in St. Lou for the Manifesto tour. In recentyears, I've come to love that trio of T-Rex records: Electric Warrior, The Slider and Tanx. The Tony Visconti production wrapped around all that trippyMarc Bolan stuff was fantastic. You can see why Bowie has hooked up with Visconti so many times over the years---ToM/NOLa
