Compared to that chemical and hormone filled poison slop found on grocery shelves,it's a no-brainer as to what's superior. As far as deer go, we got'em comin' out our butts around here. They cause 100s or 1000s of caraccidents on the roads in Ontario, and particularly on high traffic roads in Southern Ontario, and probably can't be hunted enough to keep populationsdown. I've hit 2 of them in my life. One dead on at over 70 mph in mid air after it leaped outta nowhere, and one just a few years ago on a snowy road thatI didn't see after being passed by another car. He could have warned me but didn't and I nailed it in the head with the left front corner of my car, which caused damage including shaving off my side rear view mirror. I turned around to scoop up some free meat, but it ran off into the bush. So they can'tbe hunted enough to keep their numbers down. I've got nothing against hunting. Please accept my apology!

Andy

I live in WV, Deer jumping in front of your cars. Tramping through your yards. You have to dodge the carcasses on the highway. Then you are left contemplatingif you really would tie one to the front of your new Jeep, or if maybe you might have planned your hunt a little better.

I love venison. It's good stuff. I'm not even interested in mixing in sausage to kill the "wild" taste. The last one I took bow huntingruined me. I hunted all day and late in the evening I'm walking back to my car. Up on the bank above my car is a deer standing. Without too much detail, itwent down, rolled down the hill, right to my car.

I figured it would only be harder after that one and I haven't hunted since. Not because I have anything at all against it. I'm just too lazy to dragthe things out of the woods and butcher them. I'm always willing to take any extra meat yo uhave though.
Man........ That is my worst nightmare, to be cruising along and plow into one of those things on my motorcycle... I've seen what happens to my brothers onthe bikes and it ain't purty.

Why shoot anything that can't shoot back???????????
Ww....... Rare common ground with Pete here! I like it when the deers go wild and gore some clown, even the stakes a bit, sure beats the drunk guy in the deerblind a half mile away with the snipers special, yeah, that's some real hunting!!

We finished our muzzle loader hunt Friday. 13 deer harvested, one tag left..that's a new record for our group.
I think we had 5 nice does,4 decent bucks, 2 button bucks, and 2 smaller does.
And we seen a lot more deer than what we got.

Since the winter weather has sunk in early here, there's still a fair bit of corn that's yet to be harvested. The deer we got were full of corn. Dangthings are harvesting more corn than we farmers.
We had some of Scotto's favorite the other day..some venison tenderloin..(back strap)..and it was pretty tasty.
They're more like a grain fed STEER than a wild gamey old thing.

The muzzle loaders we use are mainly .50cal rifles. I still use the old side hammer/percussion cap. Most others use In-lines now. Pretty impressive rifles.Break action,or bolt action w/removeable firing mechanism. They use 240 grain bullets, black powder pelletized loads, and shot gun primers. With scopes nowthey're going over 150 yards. Not quite high powered ranges yet..but better than what they used to be.

Still, they're muzzle loaders and are very subjected to the weather. Rain, snow dampens the powder or primer/cap,and misfires are not un common. I had onethis year myself.

Frank

Yep, but i won't kill em' with a rifle cowering in some shed. You had it right, hunting with a hammer, ya get close enough, ya win, ya don't ya getgored, play it on an even field!! Hey Pete, WHOOO!!!!!!!!
So taking a deer with a rifle is worse than how they kill mass produced meat?
I dont agree with hunting just for a trophy, but some of the best times I've had with family has been Pheasant hunting in Nebraska.... 4 generations of afamily there (Me, dad, grandpa, great grandpa)...and what we shoot during the week is what we eat for dinner. If we dont get any birds, ham sandwiches fordinner!
There's also something about being out in nature, walking the fields with two feet of snow on the ground, the dogs working in front of you quartering backand forth then BAM, they lock in on point. If you've never gone hunting, you're missing out on a true nature experience.
And however ironic it is, I cant stand fishing....I hate seeing something die slowly like that!

Deer jerky is very different from what you buy at the store. I am not sure when sniping from a shedbecame hunting, or maybe you have only seen it in movies, but around here guys actually hunt, and they fill their chest freezers with alot of meat because ofit. The shooting is the finality at the end of the hunt. Hunting is about the hunt, tracking your prey through the woods, and at the end hopefully a cleanshot drops them as humanely as possible. At the end the deer is outmatched no doubt, but until then they have the upper hand as you are in their house, andmore often than not they get away. No one I know snipes from a shed while deer parade in front of it...LOL! That happens on those two week hunting vacationsat a lodge where you shoot a tame deer! That is just target practice, not "hunting".

I've lived off wild game all of my life. Jamie's right once you pull the trigger, it's over and the work begins. Out where I live we don't huntalot of deer, don't get me wrong, deer are hunted. Elk is mostly what we fill our freezers with. One elk will keep me out the meat isle at the grocerystore for just about a year, and it's one of the healthiest proteins for you. Any how, we went 5 out of 6 this year, our best also. My nephew shot hisfirst elk and that's always exciting. I hunt the Centennial mountain range on the border of Idaho and Montana, it's beautiful. Once you shoot your elka couple miles in it gets interesting...
