Austin, Texas?????
I've got a <em><strong>"potential"</strong></em> (not a sure thing yet) job opportunity in Austin. It would mean relocating my family there for approx. 4 years. My wife is hesitant, I haven't mentioned it to the kids yet. My son is 8 and I'm sure he'd be fine, make friends quickly but my daughter is going in to High School in September and she's my main concern. <br><br> Not sure this Canadian can handle the temperatures, I think I'll melt into a puddle of goo in the summer like Frosty the Snowman, but with the economy the way it is, it might be a GREAT opportunity. <br><br> Anyone who's from Austin or surrounding area, I'd appreciate your opinion on what's great about the area, why is sucks, good areas, areas to avoid, etc. <br><br> Thanks, <br> Brian
-
Google it. I heard Austin is great. I've had two different friends in the past 8 months move there. They seem to like it so far...<br><br>Isn't TexKitty from Austin? <br>
-
I'm 2 hrs north of Austin, in Waco.<br><br>Austin is a cool city, there is TONS to do there, and a whole mix of cultures and lifestyles.<br>It does get hot here in Texas, but I moved from Cincy and it wasnt unbearable.<br>I'm not sure about what parts of austin to avoid or not, but I'm sure a realtor could help you with that.<br>My only complaint about austin is the @#%$^ traffic. It gets kinda bad when you have to travel the main roads in rush hour. Other than that though, nocomplaints.<br><br>Yes, Texkitty is from Austin.
-
Oh yeah, you should plan a trip to Austin to check it out here next month....like the same time they are doing the Lone Star Roundup <img src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/happy.gif">

Yah, I've been reading stuff online, "Wiki" and what-not (looks REALLY nice!!) but I was looking for person opinions. Even looking at Real Estatewebsites but I'm not sure what areas I should be looking in or avoiding.<br>Scott, have you got TexKitty's email? Anyone?
-
Lonestar Roundup!!! Great plan Adam!!! <img height="20" src="http://www.ezboard.com/image/posticons/pi_bigsmile.gif" width="20" alt="image"><br><p>Thanks<br></p>

I'm not from Austin but I know more than a few who do live there. It's a very cool city. It has some of the best car shows in the country for onething.<br><br>I imagine the daughter will be bummed regardless though.
-
My aunt lives in Austin and has for the last 20+ years. I'll email her and see if she has suggestions for ya.<br><br>I'll be going to the Lonestar Roundup...so there will be pics posted <img src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/happy.gif">

There's a great recorded live show on PBSmost every Friday night called Austin City Limits!<br><p>Andy<img height="15" src="http://redlinesonlinemessageboard.yuku.com/domain/bypass/images/pacman.gif" width="15" alt="image"><br></p>

Not sure what all you guys are into, but I've never seen a city with more little restraunts in my life. You could eat a different restraunt to your heartsdesire and NEVER go to a big chain again. I mean they have EVERYTHING down there.<br>The car scene is HUGE in Austin also, there are always cruise-ins and stuff going on, and as Andy mentioned, the music scene is enormous too.<br>San Antonio is only 1.5 hours away, which is where Schlitterbahn is pretty much, and thats one of the most badass waterparks you could go to. There's alsoSea World, the Alamo and the River Walk, so you guys could keep busy exploring when you get down there.
-
Thanks for the input guys! I sprung the idea on the kids at dinner. Samantha was like...." <img height="20" src="http://www.ezboard.com/image/posticons/pi_shocked.gif" width="20" alt="image"> wha.. wha.. wha.. ? "<br><p>Max was asking questions like "Are there still cowboys there having shoot-outs at high noon and stuff?" (while he's doing his gunslingerimpression) LOL<br><br>We'll see what happens. Very preliminary at this point, but I like the sound of the city so far!!<br></p>
-
And just a heads up, if you do come down, I'm going to harass you until I get you to take ole Blu to the dragstrip...San Antonio Raceway is a blast!
-
NO state income tax baby!!!!! UT football, Hippie Hollow and MUCH more!!!!

I've always heard very good things about Austin. Those comments have come from cycling friends as it's a very active and cycling aware city. Great bikeracing scene there and I think that Lance Armstrong lives near there now? The bike shop he owns is there I believe.<br>Also, they host the SXSW music festival every year with music, film, and other media. Check it out here: http://sxsw.com/<br>Let us know what you decide!
-
There are ALWAYS cyclists in downtown Austin, riding the paths along the river and such.<br>I've heard too that Armstrong is from there, so its probably true.

Lottacowboy hats and pick-up trucks in that province. It's also a tax free place (provincial sales taxes that is).<br><p>Edit:<img height="15" src="http://redlinesonlinemessageboard.yuku.com/domain/bypass/images/pacman.gif" width="15" alt="image">Albertans like to'pretend' they are Texans!<br></p>

and you can ask Adam, it's not the heat, it's the 300% humidity that's the mofo!! there is a hotwheel club in austin as well.., can't speak forthe traffic, but I don't find it surprising that Adam considers it heavy, wait ill he comes down here Houston way and rides through rush-hour traffichere!! I moved to Columbus for a couple years and always found it funny when they whined about the traffic up there, in the worst situations it took 45 minutesto get across town, Houston you get lucky to go 2 miles in that time when it backs up!!

And the Houston traffic?? I didn't think there were that many cars in the country and couldn'tunderstand Detroit making anymore!!! A few years ago I was stuck in TWO O'CLOCK freeway traffic and was on my old Gold Wing, not moving..... Mid-July andhumidity? I was thinking suicide..... Two feet every five minutes, I had boots on and when I would stop to put my foot down in the 98-degree heat, it wouldsink into the asphalt.... It took me about thirty minutes, but I managed to get off on some side streets, it took another good two hours to get out of thatplace, but at least I was moving!!! Chilled my burned up heels in the Gulf though in "Galvaston, Oh Galvaston"!!! Gotta love Glen Campbell!!!!

I lived in the DFW area for about 4 years and loved it....Alberta is the closest thing to Texas outside of Texas in my opinion. Austin is a very coolcity...lots of history if you're into that kinda thing.

Best schools in Austin
You're best bet is the Westlake area, great schools. Austin is one one those cities that you either love it or hate it. It's a great place for youngpeople with a big music scene, lakes and rivers to play in and lots of south of the border types that creat most of the traffic problems. I had three kids thatwent to college there, so I've spent some time in the city and on sixth street, lol. Yes, coming from Canada you may have a problem with the Summer'sbut you'll love the winter unless you like snow.
