Shoe store.....................RANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's been awhile with no rants, wonder why??? :)<br><br>I was shopping (hate it) for some dress shoes the other day at Kohls and while it seems to be a nice store and all it reminded me of what is missing and thatis customer service and interaction. You go to a car lot these days and you will be raped.......... by at least three salesman vying for the chance to get yourbitness....... Not so when ya buy shoes.<br><br>Clock back time......... Most shoe stores and department stores had an Al Bundy type of salesman and I loved em'!!! Your ass hit the door they were ON YOU.You didn't know your size?? They brought out a torturous chrome device that had slides and numbers all over all over it and a guy would sit you down andput your socked foot on it and measure your foot....... WHAT A CONCEPT!!!! He would come back and open what looked to be a new box, take out the shoe and thetissues wads on the inside and take the laces and lace it up and you were putting on a........... VIRGIN SHOE!!! He would sit at a little chair in front of youand then slide your foot (my mom always made me wear clean socks because of this) into the shoe.....with???<br><br>A METAL SHOE SPOON!!!! He would do it with such deft accuracy you were amazed and he would make sure it fit BEFORE you left the store, sometimes bringing outmultiple boxes to insure a perfect fit. He would do this with BOTH shoes and ask you to walk around to insure the fit and comfort. He would then ask you if youwanted to wear them out of the store, or if you wanted them boxed up?? What a great experience!<br><br>Now??? department stores, TRY and find a salesperson..... You walk in with the rest of the knuckledragging humanoids and look through a sea of shoes and try tothink what size you wear, find the many times used box yourself, find a seat, try and wedge the ill-fitting shoe onto your stressed out sweaty foot and wifeyasking "do you want to try them both on and walk around? Let me feel your toe, why didn't you wear different socks etc"??? The pain..........Make a decision based on agony and get out as fast as you can............ Sigh..... And you wonder about the good old days...................

This sounds more to be a hazy recount of alien abduction/examination than a shoe-store misadventure.

If it paid better I'd apply for the job as salesperson of ladies shoes.<br><br>On topic, I remember the full service shoe stores very well. Even better, when I was a kid one of the shoe stores had a pet monkey in a cage on the back wall.You would get fitted for shoes and bother the monkey. Now as you say, you have to do it all yourself and no more monkeys.

My grandfather had a clothing/shoe store. His shoe salesman was Mr. Clay, nicefriendly old man that would take the time to fit shoes. I remember my grandfather's store was "The" place for kids shoes. I remember thedisplay of Paul Parrot shoes. With every pair of shoes, kids would be able to get a "golden egg" which would contain all kinds of toy trinkets. I'm old enough to remember the size measuring device and the metal shoe spoon and time the salesperson took to insureproper fit. Remember the one thumb width in front of your toe rule? Salespeople who know how to properly fit a shoe are far and few between these days.<br>Yes indeed, a bygone era.

Eagle Shoes, Newark, NJ I remember the late summer ritual every year to go get new school shoes. Buster Browns were good for regular school shoes and Keds orP.F. Flyers for gym. Remember the old Keds commercial "....Keds make you jump higher, run faster...etc." Even though we were kids, the salesmenwere just as Dave describes. You need a "fit" for a pair of flip-flops? Isn't that the dresscode shoe of the paparazzi?<br><br>I recall the days gone by really well, and you can blame that trashpit box of death Walmart for the no service of today. You wanted lower prices didn'tyou? I never asked for it, and I forbid the usage of that junkdealer for anyone carrying my name. I like/liked service, and the small extra change that itrequired is/was gladly paid. My time is far more valuable, than wasting 30 minutes, trying to find an unmolested pair of steppers that fit my dogs. We'reall paying in the end, for the LOWEST prices for the masses.<br><br>Remember when you could pull into a "gas" station, not leave the comfort of your rig, some dude basically goes Jiffy-Lube on your sled-while fillingup your tank, and this cost you a few extra cents. Nowadays, you have to get out, take a shuttle bus to the megatron-station's entrance, that is also afull service junkfood emporium slash mini-Walmart (see above for thoughts of) and wait in a line that resembles a line for tickets to see the Rolling Stones,while some Jr. High dropout tries to get a pricecheck on the 72 pack of TP. You wade through that, pay the extortion fee to filler up, and heaven forbid, youoverpay for what your sled can take! Back to the shuttle, back to the ticket lines. Screw it, I just leave the change in the pump, couldn't pay me to waitagain. I'm lucky though. Only time I hit these holes is when my toys need juice, otherwise, I fillup at work. Yeehaw.

Oh, and btw, I HATE buying shoes / clothing anywhere, anyplace, anytime. Being 6'-4" and 170 lbs, with a size 12 extra-narrow shoe, I can never findanything that fits and it's always an exercise in frustration, salespeople or no.<br><br>In fact, I have a funny trick I play on salespeople - when I walk in they ask if I need any help. I tell 'em: "If you can find ANY pair of pants inthis store size 34" x 38", or any shirt size 14" x 36", or any shoe in size 12 extra-narrow, I'll buy every one you've got!"Needless to say, they never find anything. Oh, and big'n'tall shops aren't any better - they cater mostly to the BIG end of the spectrum, so if Ibuy something that's long enough, you can usually fit 3 of me in 'em.<br><br>There's MY rant!
