Technology - How Much Could YOU Live Without ?

We live in a wonderful time with all our "gotta have" gadgets and techno-gear .... computers, cell phones, satellite TV, ipods, etc.<br><br>But what if all of a sudden, all that technology was taken away and we had to revert back to the 50's era of living. What items would cause you to gothrough serious withdrawl ?<br><br>Myself, I don't have much in the way of electronic toys, and those I do have - I could get along without just fine .... except my computer / internet. Ithas opened up the world for me - from answering questions that otherwise never would have been answered to finding things that I probably never would haveacquired (but I otherwise probably would be better off financially ! <img src="http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/laugh.gif" alt="image">)<br><br>So, what could YOU just not let go of ?<br><br><br>Mark.

I easily could do without a cell phone. I have a basic one that the wife makes me carry. It's like 4-5 years old.<br><br>I could do without cable television.<br><br>The microwave sure is nice though. There are a ton of stuff I could do without but would rather not. Cell and cable aren't among them.

When I have little ones at myhouse I have appropriate kids songs on for them (even have a folder on my iPod called Kids Songs so I can put my iPod into my speakers and the kids can havetheir own music). I think the only thing I would have a hard time living without would be a computer. I was just thinking about this very topic the other day. I thought aboutbeing in High School and College, pre-computer era. I remember typing papers on a typewriter and how perfect you had to be, or you typed the page all overagain. I remember numerous research trips to the public library for various papers. My computer at home is just a portal to a interesting, electronic world. But my computer at work makes my job and my life so much easier. The ability to scan and e-mail docs, the ability to edit on the fly, the ability tocommunicate instantly anywhere in the US or world has made work so much easier than even 10 years ago. Even on a personal level, the computer isindispensable. My oldest two children live with their Mom in Toronto. My daughter just came back from camp last week. Yet thanks to e-mail I was able toinstantly send her messages every day at camp instead of snail mail taking weeks to get dated information to her. I can do the same with pictures and articlesand information to them as quickly as I can type on the keyboard.<br><br>Everything else electronic I could really live without and have often done so for long periods of time, just to test myself. My wife and I have cell phones instead of a land line because we get our internet through broadband. A land line was just one more thing to pay for that wejust don't need anymore. I have always loved gadgets and electronic technology and have always embraced new conveniences and technologies, so I would havea hard time doing without any of them, but if for some reason I suddenly had to, I could handle it.....I wouldn't like it, but I could handle it! :)

Pretty much everything except digital camera technology. That's my work and the money my company has saved on film and processing has allowed us toprosper!! When we were film my company was Kodak's largest customer, bye bye!!!!!

Funny... each and every one of the devices mentioned are computer-based... so the question, really, is "can you live without computers"?

I don't have cable/satellite TV, got my first cell phone about four years ago and don't need it for work, the newest vehicle I've ever owned is 20years old and my house doesn't have A/C. I live very well. I'd miss my digital camera, but would get used to 35mm again handily. I'd miss my DVDplayer and movies, I suppose.

Cell phone -- pfft, chuck it... who cares?! Write me a damn letter.<br><br>Cable/Satellite -- dump it; I got books and the outdoors to keep me entertained.<br><br>Ipod -- don't need it, the voices in my head are actually pretty good singers.<br><br>Computer/Internet -- ummm, I need to keep this. I need the, uh, access to um, *cough* ahem, you know.... information.

After Katrina and the flood, we returned in October 2005 to no land line, which meant no internet for me. I wrote some snail mail letters during that time. Ihave movies that I love to re-visit so my DVD player is about the only thing I need. Oh yea, I got a 3 disc cd player that keeps me tunes happy. So, those twothings. We have no i-pod, no Wi, no cable TV; I rarely use her cell phone---T0M

Now, I can't imagine life without one!<br>DVD's and HDTV's and video games... you do not want me to get bored, trust me. I'm not a big fan of air conditioning at home. Love it in the car, try not to use it at home. My thermostat at home is set at 84 degrees, and it seldomcomes on, even though it gets HOT here A LOT. It's funny how you can adapt to things, especially when you get a utility bill you don't like! I mighthave had mine on maybe 10 times all year...maybe...<br><br>Would a propane BBQ count as technology? I say yes, and that, along with the microwave would be tough to live without.<br>The computer/internet, and cell phone is a must as well. I will now try to talk on mine in grocery stores to piss off people like Dan! Can't wait...<br><br>Oh, the Blue Tooth ear bud I CAN live without. Can't stand them, but we are forced to use them while driving. I'm amazed at how many people wear themALL DAY, whether or not they get a phone call. Shouldn't really count A/C as modern technology in this thread, as it was around in the 50's (just not real affordable).<br><br>Cell phones .... I say chuck them all. Amazing to me how we all survived without them for so long, and now many folks can't go 5 minutes without usingtheirs in some way. I could also live without cable TV, but I do enjoy it from time to time. Don't own an I-pod, so I don't know what I'm missingthere. Same with video game consoles.<br><br>But I do love the internet. The information available is unbelievably helpful. And it makes shopping much easier for many items. Ebay opened up a whole newworld for me, as I never really thought of re-selling to suppliment my income before Ebay came along. And I also love the internet because it allows me to keepin touch with friends that I otherwise likely would have lost touch with (was never good at letter-writing, and even worse at making phone calls).<br><br>Uh-Oh ..... gotta go ..... I think my 8-track player is eating my Houses Of The Holy tape!<br>;-)

I have to say that I can't go for too long without my Blackberry. By customers deal with me because I am responsive through whatever means ofcommunication they decide to use. If they text me I text them right back. Same for calls and emails. If I went to just a phone there's no way I could dothat.<br><br>The bluetooth setup is nice when I have to talk to a manufacturer while I have my hands in a machine. Otherwise it is the most uncomfortable thing I have everworn. I don't know how people leave them in their ears for the whole day.<br><br>Back in June the TV stations started broadcasting in digital only. The TV hasn't been on since except for to watch a DVD. Hells Kitchen comes though theinternet just fine and there is only about 30 seconds of commercial per break.<br>

If I didn't need a digital Cam and desktop PC for making money on eBay, then I wouldn't need any of it. I was doing fine before, a land telephone,cassette tapes, etc. It's all fluff that makes everything more complicated. Heck I can fix a carburetor and even wind a watch! Take me back to 1965!<br> I know the younger folks would have a tough time with it, but really- it wasn't so bad!

Yea, we'd be just fine back in 1965. Some of these kids that I tutor would not even be able to read the face of a traditional clock; more than a few havetold me that they can only read a digital clock---T0M
