Great cover. When I was born in '61 my siblings were 8, 10 and 17. Earliest memories are of my brother's 45s of Snoopy vs the Red Baron, and of Surfin' Bird by The Trashmen. Then I got into my sister's Beatles 45s and I was off and running.
Charlie,
Yours was so well known that I can remember most of the lyrics like it was yesterday.
Mine would have to be She'd Rather Be With Me by The Turtles. When I was a kid, it was my first 45 record and my older sister bought it for me.
I am finally going to see The Turtles (Flo & Eddie) this month here in town.
John
For me it was "Dream Weaver" by Gary Wright. Not exactly childhood but just pre-teen.

For some reason that song was on the radio stations playlist for the time my alarm clock would go off each morning. Having a radio alarm clock was big stuff in that year! As I think about it that may not have been a fond memory because I hated getting up in the morning.

Herb

I just checked and that song came out when I was thirteen. Not pre teen. Now that I think about it I can't remember anything before that age? lol
The first song I can remember really liking as a kid was 'Fox on the Run' by Sweet because it was constantly being played on a jukebox at a diner I used to go to.

My first was when I was about 2 & The Beatles 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' was the song that I would sing & loved. I remember The Doors 'Light My Fire' being another that I that stayed with me. I hate to admit it but I loved The Partridge Family show & songs.....'I Think I Love You'.....'Dosen't Somebody Want To Be Wanted' & 'Little Willy' by Sweet was also one of my all time favs as a kid.

My Dad was and is a Grand Funk fan and "Shinin On" was one that reminds me of those long ago days! Love that killer 3D cover art too!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnRU_rWJ0sE

I can tell you what is NOT my favorite from childhood:
Heartbeat, it's a Lovebeat~DeFranco Family
Me and You and a Dog Named Boo~Lobo
Watching Scotty Grow~Bobby Goldsboro
Having my Baby~Paul Anka!!! YIKES!!!!

Answering your question though...seriously...I remember when Mom and Dad bought the "Let it Be" Album...I loved listening to that one...just loved it. The whole family would listen to it on our Philco Ford TV with built in turntable console!!!!

I used to also like to listen to my mom and dads old 78's and 45's...Chubby Checker the most!
Welcome to my nightmare
Alice Cooper
not really childhood but this song just reminds me of the great times in my senior year 1982-1983, great music too. todays stuff just sucks

96 Tears - Questionmark and the Mysterians!
Music my parents listened to that I liked as a child included Neil Diamond, Simon and Garfunkel, and the Beatles.
My first 45 was Convoy by C.W. McCall. Loved that song.

Believe it or not....the first 45/single I bought was Olivia Newton John crooning Dylan's 'If Not For You'. At age 10 I had it bad for Liv. The first LP I bought was the Chicago album with 'Saturday in the Park' on it. 'Around the World with Three Dog Night' soon followed, though on 8 track as I recall.

Scott

Olivia's music was not a childhood memory for me, but I was part of that club too, Scott! Ha, ha! Hopelessly in love.
A tie between Strawberry Fields and I Am The Walrus......
I seemed to have discovered rock/pop music in 1971 at age 9. My memories of music before 1971 was Dad playing The Lettermen on a Concord reel-to-reel player --- it was terrible. Anyway, in 1971, it was Don McLean's "American Pie." A guilty pleasure was in 1974, "Billy, Don't Be A Hero" by Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods --- the junior high chics dug that song.

Regards,
Michael
The 1st song I recall as a kid was American Pie, my brother used to say "Chevy to the Levy" all day when he was like 4! After that everyday in the summer at precisely 3PM at the town pool they played "Band on the Run." Everyday, like clockwork, maybe because thats when free swim was over and it was a message for the kids to leave! We only had 2 local AM stations that played any music worth listening to!

End swim, jump on Schwinn, head to the 5 and dime! Then to LL baseball usually started at 4:30 or so...man great times and memories indeed!

Dream Weaver by Gary Wright is still my all time fav. and another is "9999999 tears" by Dicky Lee."

I remember a goofy yellow or red colored record (45) that was "Davy Crockett". Wore that sucker out until it sounded so bad, my Dad came in and threw it in the trash.
"Pineapple Princess" by Annette Funicello (I know... "well that just figgers for groggerbug....")! I had such a crush on her.... I remember listening to the song and staring at her picture on the jacket... I was in love...
Wow guys great stories. I just loved that album and havent seen it for years.

Thanks
Now, this is weird........I hadn't thought about that Davey Crockett deal since I was 7 years old. I mentioned it yesterday (look above) and Fess Parker died yesterday.......it was in the paper today. I had absolutely no idea. That makes me feel bad.
I remember playing the 45rpm of this song over and over and over-

The album Queen II changed my life. I think I was around 13 or so, so I'm not sure if it qualifies as "childhood."
