Poll > What's the greatest war movie of all time?

To help commemorate Memorial Day I thought I'd do this poll. I had to limit this to just 10 even though there are way over 20 times that amount of possibility's. Please include whatever film you would have liked to have seen on here if it's not listed in this poll as it was nearly impossible to limit it to just 10. I voted for Saving Private Ryan but if Band of Brothers was on the list, that one is the best in my opinion.

One of the great modern war time movies that wasn't included was Black Hawk Down. This should have been in this poll as well.

My all-time favorite is Sergeant York, but others that are underappreciated include: * Run Silent, Run Deep: Gable and Lancaster in the benchmark submarine flick. * They Were Expendable: John Wayne and P.T. boats in the Pacific; not well-known, but well done. * M*A*S*H: Some object to a humorous spin on war, but there's some classic stuff here. * Tora, Tora, Tora: Made a real impact on me when I was a kid. 'Pearl Harbor' is fluff by comparison. * Midway: Some heckle it, but this movie tells an important WWII story in depth. Cool Memorial Day topic. Gratitide and blessings to all of you who have served to keep us free! Scott

Band of Brothers, was a series, but it would be near the top. Hurt Locker was a great war movie, and it's a true account of what goes on.

Wow... so many greats have been named. I'll stir the pot by adding a few more: French/Indian War: Last of the Mohicans(1992), with honorable mention to Northwest Passage (1940, starring Spencer Tracy) WWI: Lawrence of Arabia (1962) WWII: Battleground (1949, starring Van Johnson and James Whitmore), Das Boot (1981) Korea: Pork Chop Hill (1959, starring Gregory Peck) And kudos to the posters who mentioned Taking Chance and The Best Years of our Lives.

I've seen THE GREAT ESCAPE so many times that that was an easy choice for me. Another boyhood fav was WHERE EAGLES DARE with all that Yakima Canut second unit work for the finale. Film snobs favs include GRAND ILLUSION and a Kubrick film called PATHS OF GLORY. The best Hitler in the bunker flick is a recent film called DOWNFALL.

I would also vote for Saving Private Ryan as the best (other than the WTF moment when Ted Danson shows up), an absolute emotional wringer from the storming of the beach right through the scene in the cemetary. You simply feel drained after watching it. Powerful stuff. 
My favorite though is Stalag 17, if I can count a POW camp movie as a war movie.
