Im going to cry :(
A guy on another forum found this on Craigslist and said it was too far for him to go look at it.
I saw it, but am not in the position to buy another car right now, so I told a co-worker about it…and he went to look at it, then bought it. Yesterday my friends and I went to go pick it up for him (4 hour drive)…but I’m kicking myself for not being able to buy it.
’72 Plymouth Duster “Gold Duster”
Its got a few typical spots, but nothing bad…it fired right up and drove itself onto the trailer without skipping a beat.
I felt bad for the seller, he’s had the car since he was 16 and said he just doesn’t drive it anymore. He had ALL original receipts for it, from oil changes to inspections, to insurance stuff…even ones for where he was buying a switch for it. Original broadcast sheet was in with the paperwork, as well as the owners manual and a cool old hat pin. There were even a few OLD pictures in there, I’m guessing from when he first bought the car. He was the 2nd owner of it.
It has been repainted (factory color), and the motor is not the original but an original 318 was put in its place. Its not PERFECT, but its still an awesome car for its age…and the smoking deal of $1,000
I think I’m going to go cry now.
But hey, it gives me hope that when the time comes, I will be able to pick up a car like this.

Re: Im going to cry :(
I don't know where you live, but heck, NO WAY are there deals like that here! I have a Dodge, but it needs a hell of a lot of work. Nice score!

Re: Im going to cry :(
My dad tried to get me to buy one of these back in 82, if I remember right the back seat lays down. And you can put a ladder in there if you wanted too. In 2001 I found a original one owner 1969 2 door fastback mercury with approximate 60k miles, og paint and interior, I think it had a 464 marader engine the car was completely stock get this $2000. My wife even said I could buy it so when info ready to buy it the guy couldn't produce the pink slip so I had to turn it down. Earlier this. Year I saw a 67 ranchero, original paint and interior $2500 bucks it sat for over a month, before it sold, that's ok I started to save up there are more deals out there, I'll get another chance

Re: Im going to cry :(
For $1000.00 your friend stole that car. Where I live, that would bring at least 5000. Great score.

Re: Im going to cry :(
poor lad must not have the internet. Could have posted it on craigslist for 5 or 6,000 and sold it the next day. I would have bought it for that :( I'm lookin at a friends 71 mustang El Grande. Almost the same color... Wants more than 1,000, but its in good shape. I'm not much of an el grande fan though. Would much rather have a mach1 or fastback

Re: Im going to cry :(
Is that vinyl on the roof? I don't recall the Gold Duster option.
Helluva Deal!
-
Re: Im going to cry :(
Its not JUST vinyl, its "reptile skin" vinyl, very cool "factory" addition.

Re: Im going to cry :(
Nice Duster. A Demon or Duster in that condition is 5k easy in these parts.
I remember the Gold Dusters special edition, throw in a 340 and its really nice!

Re: Im going to cry :(
Sooooo, i havent been around much but theres a reason.
I bought a 87 Ramcharger with a 390 stroker from a friend w/ a 727btrans and 3200 stall. I will be buying the duster posted in this thread from my friend next month and was planning on putting the 390 in the Duster.
Well, now I am thinking of doing a bbig block swap in the Duster and keeping the 390 in the Ramcharger to use as a tow pig.
Thoughts?

Re: Im going to cry :(
Maybe it's too typical but Dusters just seem right with a 340 or 360.
-
Re: Im going to cry :(
I may save the big block for the next project.
the Duster is an original 318 car and the Ramchargers stroker is a "correct" 318 based 390 stroker, so it would look original and fit as it should.

Re: Im going to cry :(
I had seen a killer Demon a while back that had a 440 in it. Not sure how much work was invested to do that, but I would think that was a killer ride.

Re: Im going to cry :(
Its not bad. Dfferent motor mounts, retrofit headers and a big block bellhousing 727 and youre golden. Aaaaah i guess its a good thing to have so many choices lol

Re: Im going to cry :(
Hey The photos are gone...got any photos?
My buddy in high school had a white Duster 318 and he hopped it up...it was a radical ride and would spin the rears forever...I love the Duster body way more than the Demons.
Congrats on getting another shot at the car.

Thanks for the photos ...WOW!
Awesome survivor...is there any rust on the body?
I see it has the factory rallys too...definitely worth restoring!
Huge Congrats!

One more of the Duster, one of the donor Ramcharger...and the 390 stroker in the Ramcharger.

Re: Im going to cry :(
Nice ...Again awesome pick up...very little rust...clean body...a true survivor!

Re: Im going to cry :(
Dont have a whole lot to report on this, been to busy helping others with their projects to work on my own unfortunately.
Pulled the donor stroker motor from the Ramcharger, took it apart and found out the block was shot (water in a cylinder, rust). Got a new block and sent it to the machine shop to get worked over, then started looking at the old heads....the old motor ate pushrods so took the heads in and they found the previous builder installed the valve springs way wrong and they were going into coil bind long before the max lift of the cam was achieved (installation error, not spring selection error). Got that fixed and the crank polished and the rotating assembly rebalanced, and the shortblock components just need to go back together now. Need a few more things then it can go in the Duster....hopefully when it cools off some I'll get back into the swing of things.
