Re: Slot Car Racing - 1966
Donald,
Great ... ( re-pave the highway, lol ) ... read but all I'm seeing is a red x.
True geometry to building the tracks & defying phyics to hold the cars to 'em.
Still waiting for the time-space-funds to start up my wants of a 6-8 lane HO course.

Re: Slot Car Racing - 1966
I do not see the pic either.
Slot cars are fun toys yes yes.
T-Jet the good stuff, cut the wheel wells.Add 3 in 0ne oil to the track for a burnout blast.
I like this topic, hope to see some cool electric cars.

Re: Slot Car Racing - 1966
Oops. I re-loaded the picture on to another site. Hope you can see it now.
I have no idea why it didn't show the first time because it did for me.
Thanks for the heads up.
Yes. I'd love to see other pictures of electric cars and tracks, etc.
Cheers!

I didn't make into that picture. The guy in the middle is my brother sandwiched between two of my cousins.

Re: Slot Car Racing - 1966
Donald,
Nice pic, bets ( well pretty close eh ) are Don your in the middle.
"Wow" quite the track alright, the time/effort that goes into a build like that.
So what was his final solution to keep you away from the "500", lol ?

Gimmee the Galaxie 500, lol!!!!!
Nice setup, my Pops built a 1/24th scale Dragstrip back in the mid '60's, complete with powered return lanes curving around about 2 ft after the finish line of the scale 1320, to bring the cars back for another drag race...........
Burned a lot of sponge rubber on that strip as a kid, my fav Drag Cars were a 1/24 scale '33 Willys Cox Gasser, and a Cox '57 Ford Fairlane......
They cost 8.50 apiece, lol, i mowed a lot of lawns to buy those cars, and i was only 7!
Those were the days..........

Actually, I was wondering the same thing. Probably my mother. She liked to choreograph pictures and it looks like this was one of her 'just doit or else' moments. We never did find out what the 'or else' part meant.

Re: Slot Car Racing - 1966
Really nice track set-up. I'm sure you had a super Dad. Not too many dads would do that for their kids. Congrats!
Re: Slot Car Racing - 1966
I never had anything outragiously expensive or serious, though I think it would be fun someday. The toys I did have I had a lot of fun with. Sadly, my little brother and all the moves led to busted and lost parts along with many other of my cherished toys. My favorite was "Doomsday Duel" and some giant, huge NASCAR track I got for Christmas. Circa 2000/2001? Oh, I remember getting it and setting it up with my uncle and racing around getting my butt whipped. Sadly, I get a feeling this hobby is dying.
Re: Slot Car Racing - 1966
My Dad had a 4x8 platform that he used for HO trains at Christmas. At one point. 66 or later, he bought some Aurora slot car stuff. So the tradition changed to trains in December and slot cars in January. We never had a lot of money but each year we would buy 1 more thing for the trains and one more thing for the slots. My Dad was always up for a race and never LET me win. So if I won it was because I was truly better. We had tons of fun. I think the hobby is dying out because today's sets are mostly cars that rarely if ever fly off the track. My son received one like that. A few years after that I pulled out the old Aurora stuff, figuring he would love it. He did not. He said it was too hard and BORING when cars went off the track. I guess we were used to one kind of challenge and the younger ones are used to a different kind of challenge.

Re: Slot Car Racing - 1966
As some of you know, Im into the Classic Bikes. I bought a 1966 Sears catalog for some bike ads in it for a bike I was restoring. It does have some slot car stuff too and if I can figure out my scanner, I can get you guys a nice pic of it.
Re: Slot Car Racing - 1966
Hi William,
That is a very cool car you've got there. I've never seen a slot car produced by Texaco before and didn't know they made them.
That car is in 1/24 scale, which I think was used more by commercial slot racing venues rather at home.
Our slot car track was built for 1/32 scale cars. We got our cars from the well-known plastic model kit companies: AMT, Revell, Monogram, Testor, etc. Some of the custom motors came from other companies. I can't remember their names. :p
I came across this interesting site called the Los Angeles Slot Car Museum. I recognized some of the cars we had there. My favorites were a blue Shelby Cobra and a red Mustang.
