Hey Steve, So you want to buy a Motorcycle good for you. The best way to see what you like is to go test ride it. Seriously test riding a bike is the best way to see if you like the way it rides and handles. Most dealers have bikes to test ride and you can even schedule it online...Im partial to Harleys and if you don't want a tourer or cruiser and want something sporty the V ROD is very cool. I rode it when it first came out and it handles great, comfortable riding position and has serious power Im talking scary fast. Go for it!

    Suzuki SV-650

Cheap, nimble, tons of aftermarket parts, decent power.

If you are a tall person like me, you might want to look into a 2001-2005 Yamaha FZ1.
I purchased one new in 2001. My Brother liked it so much he bought one in 2002. His buddy bought a new one in 2003. They are a great, inexpensive bike that is fun in town and a day long trip won't kill your back either. Sporty, but taller handlebars so you don't have to lay down to ride it. I still have it 9 years later. It still looks like new! My bro and his bud have kept theirs too...
Here is a pic before my brother and I left for the Millville Motocross nationals.
Mine is the faster Blue one.

Here is mine. 2008 Harley Davidson Dyna Fatbob
96 cubic inch motor with a 6 speed transmission.
It's not a cruiser or crotch rockit but It gets me to work (33 miles one way) compfortably at 80 miles an hour.

My advice to you Steve is to find a local place that has weekly bike nights. You can see everything available in one spot and you can talk to the owners and see most available mods. You can't do that at a dealer!
Also I would suggest you check out this website.
    www.localriders.com
Lots of help forums buy sell etc.
Keep us informed and ask many questions.
I think everybody I know that has a bike always says I wish or I should of gotten that one.

Department of Motor Vehicles indicates that 23% of traffic accidents are alcohol related. This means that the remaining 77% are caused by people who drink coffee and other crap like that.

    like HD Don said

    - visit local dealers with an open mind don't say somithing is good and somithing not.
    - Ask for test drives and test everything as possible, racers, cruisers, tourers
    - If you found the style you like maybe tourers test them again small engines, big engines different makes and so on.

every people is different so are the bikes, let you time. There is a bike for every use and everyone. If you do it this way you don't have to think abouth resell value.

I tested a year long to find the bike i'm happy with and after 3 years it's still fun to drive it over the mountain roads here in Switzerland.

BTW Classic Bikes are fun too

Some GREAT advice being offered here. I knew this was a good place to ask. Thanks to all of you for your input so far.
Some good looking bikes being posted up. I'll take the advice to test ride for sure. There's a few places nearby that I should be able to do that. It looks like it will be a process, but just like hunting reds, that will be one of the fun parts.
Did anyone notice that the two Sizzler guys were the first to post up sport bikes? Is their any correlation there? SSizler, how tall are you? I'm 6'-0".
HDDon, I'll check out the V Rod.
I'll probably be back to ask more questions.

    ^^ Those are killer! ^^

It depends on what you like?

    1) Do you like sport bikes?
    2) Do you like cruisers?
    3) Do you like metric?
    4) Do you like American?

I like metrics and mainly Yamaha bikes so I'll will be partial to that. Really just ride what you like.

Here's what I ride: Yamaha Roadstar Warrior (Yamaha stopped selling them 2010)

I wanted the best of both, have a cruiser with a sport inspired suspension with all aluminum frame. 1700CC Pushrod motor. I'd don't really care for an overhead cam motor in a cruiser.
