70's Glam/Rock

As the author of this thread, I'd like to say a couple things.
I am a fan most of these bands, especially Roxy Music, Bowie & Mott The Hoople. Not so much for The Sweet except for a couple tunes. I intended to startthis thread because I know many of the Redline Collectors I've met over the years are the same age as me and fans of this type of music (Glam), and manyother Classic Rock bands too. A common thing for me at Hot Wheels Conventions is when your hanging out with friends in your rooms late night and are donetalking Redlines, the conversation many times turns to music.
This was supposed to be an enjoyable thread, not a battle between board members. Could we try and keep it that way or let the thread drop off and go away?
By the way Dave, the music sounds just as good now without a buzz as it did back then with the mushrooms & acid. I never tried Borax or Drano. How is it?

The only video (of John's) that I disagree with being glam is the one of Lou Reed. Just my opinion, John =) Alice Cooper is the original shock rocker, KISSthe original Show Rockers, and I consider Bowie the original Glam Rocker. I never noticed before how much influence the styles of clothing and mannerisms (andmakeup) of those in the earlier videos affected the "official?" glam rock of the 80s. I didn't care much for 80s glam during the 80s but over thepast few years, I've developed a good appreciation for it.

Alice Cooper was one of the big influences in my early guitar playing, as were the likes of Led Zeppelin and BTO. I also learned a bit of funk back then that Ihave to say was a huge influence in a funkpunk band I once played in.

Gregg: I agree, Ian Hunter is fantastic. I have a lot of guitar heroes. Real, actual guitars, that is.

Oh, Kitty! Reed did indeed go through a "glam" period. See CD inserts here: The blurriness is not me. That's the album. But most of know and love him more as this:

The SWEET was the first concert I saw...on the "Action" tour in 1975 or '76. My dad took me to the show and complained about the "funnysmelling handrolled cigarettes" all night!




I loved all those bands, esp MOTT and Lou Reed. Lou's "Rock and Roll Animal" is a masterpiece of live recording and playing (he was backed by thestudio hired gun/hotshot guys from Alice Cooper). If you like that record the rest of the show was released as "Lou Reed Live," but I'm not sureif it has gotten the remastering treatment that "Animal" recently received. It's funny, you can hear someone yell, "Lou Reed sucks,"right after "Sad Song." It has a great version of "Waiting For My Man."

Great music from a great era.

Roxy Music was one of the most under-rated (especially here in the States) bands of all time. Avalon is still to this day, in my opinion, one of the bestalbums of all time. Brian Ferry's solo effort Boys And Girls is equally as good, and continued in the same direction. But with David Gilmour handling muchof the guitar work. (particularly the song Slaave To Love. Tell me thatisn't a beautiful work of art) I know that there are some of us here who love Duran Duran - Karen!- Give Roxy a listen and a look, to see where so many ofthe British acts of the 80s based their musical and visual influences.

I wasn't really into The New York Dolls (below) but I did think David Johanssons "In Style" was a really good album. I didn't think much ofBuster but you have to pay the bills I guess. LOL
