It's a rat snake. Most of them will avoid confrontation with humans as much as possible. Occasionally I'll encounter an aggressive one, but that's almost always in the Spring when they're looking for food. If you feel the need to relocate it - I highly recommend you keep it close by unless you have small children who won't listen to you when you tell them to keep away - please try to be gentle with it. They are in the boidae family (related to boas and pythons) and they do have teeth, but I've only had one try to bite me.

I have, however, had about four of them musk me. It's a defense mechanism. When animals such as coyotes try to eat them, they expel a really foul-smelling fluid from their cloaca. You'd swear it's feces, but it's not. It really stinks!

The reason I highly recommend that you keep it around is, when you see a rat snake, it is there because their main source of food is nearby. Especially at this time of the year, they can eat a LOT of rodents that otherwise could sneak into your house, garage, storage shed, etc. That one's a real beauty!
