If there is sentient life in the universe,it must be a long ways away. It's awesome to realize that even traveling at the speed of light, we don'treally get very far. You would have to travel at 186,000 miles per second for about four years to get to the nearest star in our universe (other than the sunof course). The distances are awe inspiring.Although I am a creationist I don't see any logical problem with the idea that intelligent life could exist inanother universe. I wonder though what mode of transportation we could hope to use in order to find each other in the vastness of space. I really like therelative sizes of the planets and stars at the beginning of this thread. Our little planet is certainly not very impressive relative to many of the bodies inthe universe.---mike

PS I believe scientists in the field have changed their minds regarding Pluto. I think we're back to only eight planets.

Great read everyone! I love this debate

"Life" ? Is it? Or isn't it? That! Is the Question!? We are such small things!!!! Nothing much really, and out there in the vastunknown, its scary I know!

Ooh, silly little humans, Still down here are we, hard at it on what now? Still working on them fossil fuel cars we say? Oh my! We (human beings?)should be collectively working

to improve Terra Firma (yes! on solid war(less) ground would be nice too) and save its remaining very rare and beautiful outer space "scienceprojects" that live here within it. Worthy are we?

I Donno? Personally I do hope we are, but the jury is indeed still out on that case!!

Truth is, we have so so much to learn! I hope WE TRULY GET IT SOME DAY., Do you hear what I'm saying fellow carb units?

As for the serious space talk, well I must say I miss Carl Sagan very much RIP

He was such a wonderful teacher of us "star dust" creations, and yes, quite a decent human being too! To quote him: Billions and Billions!

I'm going to watch "Contact" now!

Breathe in... breathe out... feel the life energy... where does it come from? What's to have to "know" with the mind what can be experienced byjust taking a breath?

    It's all one.

I have no more to say.

Okay! But The days of Rum & Coke are long gone over for me!! So it wouldn't improve the debate It'll have to be a Coke and a Smile forme my man! Agreed!

Besides-- I'd rather be "clear headed" on debates of the universe don't ya know! It boggles the mind ALL by itself! No help is neededthere!

Loved the original post, too. I had a 3 inch refractor telescope when I was a kid so I studied up on this stuff a bit. One piece of info that stuck with meover the years was that Antares (the red super giant in the constellation Scorpio) would stretch out past the orbit of Mars if placed into our solarsystem---ToM

Ya know my mom instilled in me pretty young the wonder of the stars and the planets above. Later on Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek, The NG and then VoyagerSeries gave me (us) a look at what is INDEED POSSIBLE, and possibly what awaits us. All sorts of life forms to seek out, some good, some bad and the trulyhorrible things just like us are likely Out There oooooooh Noooooo! All for us to meet, If, a big freaking IF! But if someday, we can come together as oneplanet, one people and pool our minds, bodies in the right direction and then venture out there, really out there! Why not explore more into the boundlessunknown of the universe. Its worth the investment I say! Aaaaaahhh but yes, to dream! A NuT in more ways tha onE! Guilty! I'm always the"dreamer RV traveler" in mind, body and sole! And I do it for a living!

But for now in the meantime we can ALL simply look up and truly marvel at the stars... And yes!

Make that wish if you like please, Heck, we sure do, especially now, we're in Laughlin gambling heavy!!!!!

Wish for us to win so won't you pleeze! ... ... Okay! Back to topic heh!
