JMHO. They made zip because they had no talent. They were the musical version of Paris Hilton.
I think they had more talent than most (all?) of today's rap stars. At least there was some attempt to bash away at something to get a sound.
Well, that's not setting a very high bar.![]()
"They made zip because they had no talent"
Milli Vinilli had NO talent. The Pistols are 100% dead straight up Punk Rock, and if you don't understand what Punk was/is about, then you might compare them to some classic rock band, with all the nice riffs/beats and what not. Punk was never about any of that. It was far simpler. No talent NEEDED to be Punk Rock, and that is the beauty of it. If the crap comes together, then it's all the better, but the premise never changes.
^^Egg-zactly! Couldn't have said it better myself.
Punk rock pioneers the Sex Pistols and the Ramones both share the ballot of the 2002 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nomination ballot along with more mainstream acts such as Jackson Browne and Tom Petty.
The Ramones had talent. The Misfits had talent. The Clash started out as a Punk band. They had talent. Even Iggy Pop who was famous for much the same reasons as the Sex Pistols had talent.
The Sex Pistols talent was in cussing on television, puking and spitting on people. They were a media invention much like the Backstreet Boys.

The whole Punk Rock scene was based on not taking yourself too seriously and just having fun. It was a breath of fresh air to the canned music that was being made in the 70's and 80's bands like the Pistols, Clash, Ramones bascially said FU to the music industry and did what they wanted to do. I always liked the Punk Rock attitude and liked those bands and did see the Ramones live (twice). Clubs like CBGB's, Max's Kansas City and Great Gildersleeves welcomed the Punk and New Wave bands and I always had a good time at those clubs. You gotta be open minded...
DON
Their only album I know is Never Mind The Bollocks. Listen past the noise and it's full of catchy hooks and melodies (yes, that's the word I mean to use). It's influential for a reason. Music is too subjective to argue about, just enjoy it. It's evident from other postings that the majority here prefer heavy metal that's lost on me, and I agree with maybe 15% of others' favorites. I'm glad the board's here to turn me onto sites like Selvedge Yard.
