I grew up near Knotts Berry farm. when I was young, (in the 50's), it was mostly just a ghost town, and a chicken dinner restaurant , it was heavenly.......They still have the chicken restaurant to this day, it's really big they seat several hundred people at once. ( I have dated a few of the girls who work there).
I have never liked KFC, I am amazed that they got so big. IMO Church's and Popeyes chicken is much better.....In the small town I live in, we only have a KFC, so the only time I get good chicken is when I travel or make my own.....Michael
Chicken is so dang versatile....I love it a myriad of ways. Though not the healthiest of options, if you're simply going for flavor seek out broasted chicken. Broasting is basically a combination of pressure cooking and frying that results in chicken that is less greasy yet juicier inside. In my experience, the best broasted chicken is typically found at smaller, privately owned establishments who specialize in preparing it. Bon appetit!![]()
"Broasted" is synonymous with what Kentucky Fried Chicken was originally, back in the day. The Colonel perfected a method with a pressure cooker to speed the cooking time, and of course the "11 Herbs & Spices". In my college days "The Big Bird" (now gone), a small eatery on the fringe of the University of South Carolina campus featured Broasted Chicken, a favorite. "I'll have a two-piece and tea."
There was a news feature last week (did I see it here?) about KFC trying to reintroduce the Colonel to the newest generation, who haven't a clue as to who he was. Most telling were the reader comments. Much vitriol about how the company lost its way, rude servers, recipe changes resulting in inferior food, and quality control and cleanliness issues the Colonel would never have allowed. One more company that lost its focus when it lost its founder (see also: Wendy's, Wal-Mart).
When Church's is fresh, it's very good. Otherwise, watch out. Popeye's is consistently good. Krystal of all places used to have a killer chicken sandwich that I miss. Zaxby's is above average. Personally I find Chick-Fil-A expensive and too dry for my tastes, so I don't understand their following.
I wish all of them would steer away from such extreme use of hormones in chicken breeding. It makes the birds bigger sooner, but that stuff can't be good for us.
and.....how many things are discribed as "Tastes like chicken"?
but for straight up chicken, my all time fav is Chicken cutlet parm.

I know what Michael is talking about when he mentioned the Chicken restaurant at Knotts. My God that was good yard bird. I haven't been in many years though. Hey Michael did you ever visit the alligator farm across the street?
Oh yeah, I went to the alligator farm many times. I could write a book about my history with Knotts. I am sure that through the years, I must have gone there several hundreds of times.
Tons of memory's Starting as far back as I can remember, my grandma loved the place and she would pick me up and just her and I would go get a chicken leg and a glass of boysenberry punch. I must have been, maybe 3 or 4 yrs old.
When I was in high school (class of 65) it was still free admission so it was cheap date and a fun place to go. Now I take my Grandkids there. I just had a great grandchild born, so maybe someday I will take her (am I really that old?) Michael
That was my first real job! I would deliver Chicken Delight after high school and weekends. "Don't cook tonight, call Chicken Delight". They made Chicken, ribs, fish, and pizza. This was back in around 1967/1968. Had some crazy stories from my delivery days (and NIGHTS!!) Tips were fair except once in a while you would get a guy you could tell was having an affair and he wanted to show off to his "friend" and give me a $10 or $20 tip. SWEET!
